Pope Innocent III (Latin: Innocentius III; c.1160-1216, born Lothar of Segni), was Pope from 1199 to 1216, proving to be one of the most powerful and influential of the medieval popes, exerting a wide influence over European Christian states and claiming supremacy over its kings. He was of central importance in overseeing ecclesiastical reform, most notably through the Fourth Lateran Council, and for overseeing a number of military ventures, most notably the Fourth Crusade and the Albigensian Crusade.
