What personality type is Charlie Spring? Charlie Spring is an ISFP personality type in MBTI, 6w5 - sp/so - 649 in Enneagram, RLOAI in Big 5, EII in Socionics.
[Edited so that I could move my Se examples from the comment section to the original post!] I have a feeling that there will eventually be an influx of INFP voters, especially after the show comes out, so I'll get a head start while I can... Se/Ni is mostly visible in his tendency to jump to conclusions, usually the worst-case scenario. Fi-Ni looping is highly likely; When he's feeling bad or insecure, he looks for evidence that validates that feeling, making connections that are quite far from what's realistic, which suggests the suppressing of Se in favor of immature Ni's conjectures. "Nick is straight", "Nick only let me kiss him out of pity", "Nick won't say 'I love you' back to me". Really, this is just him projecting his own feelings about himself onto Nick. • "Nick is straight" translates to "It is impossible for someone like Nick to be into someone like me". • "Nick only let me kiss him out of pity" really means "Pity is the only reason why anyone would want to kiss me." • "Nick won't want to say 'I love you' back to me" is code for "I'm not worthy of Nick's love". He confuses his own feelings about himself with the feelings of others, something typical of concurrent use of Fi + Ni. Without much help from Se auxiliary, he misguidedly seeks answers within himself rather than attempting to look at the situation from an external perspective, making his perspective limited to his own Fi feelings and his own Ni conjectures that are based on those feelings. This pattern is consistent throughout the entire book. What makes Fi-Ni loop more likely is the fact that he wholeheartedly believes in his conjectures without doubt or question (indicative of Ne blindness as well) to the point where, after their first kiss, Charlie is in complete and utter distress because he genuinely believed that Nick didn't actually want to kiss him. This is quite different from INFP insecurity, insofar as INFP avoid conjecturing. They ask "What if they think X?", "What if X will happen?", whereas Charlie states "Y person thinks X", "X will probably happen". Ni states what it perceives to be the one singular truth, while Ne has a million questions without any answers. Ne/Si possibilities vs. Se/Ni tunnel vision. Just in case the Fi-Ni loop argument isn't satisfactory, here are some ways in which he uses Se: • Compared to Nick, he is very natural in his displays of physical affection. Nick, an Si type, seems too engulfed in his own subjective sensory experience to pay attention to what he's doing with his hands (especially during kisses - very stagnant, rigid, stiff, awkward). He gets better at it in the later chapters, but it unarguably comes more naturally to Charlie. Because Charlie uses Se, he is able to keep himself in the moment, and his movements are more graceful and fluid in turn. • During truth or dare, he didn't even hesitate to choose dare. High Se types are natural sensation-seekers, and tend to feel a sort of rush in doing something risky like a dare. Si types, in comparison, are careful and cautious. Because of the nature of Ne/Si, they are chronically unsure and prone to the "what if?" sort of anxiety. Charlie is not only a thrill-seeker, but he is decisive. • Another smaller example of Se sensation-seeking in Charlie: He is physically passionate, even expressing the urge to push Nick up against the wall (he actually did this once in chapter 4 iirc). Nick is rather moderate in his displays of affection, but Charlie always shows this sort of fire that lights up in him while expressing physical affection. • Comparing him to Nick is quite useful in this aspect, since ESFJ and ISFP are shadow pairs. Charlie is bold - always making the first move, despite suffering from anxiety (ex. their first kiss, saying "I love you"). Charlie is usually the one who initiates, where Nick follows his lead. Nick is cautious - his "moves" are shy and careful. A good example of this: Charlie bluntly asks Nick if he would kiss him, but Nick gets all flustered admitted that "it's not that I [Nick] didn't want to.... kiss you [Charlie]........" • He had to be informed that he had experienced something traumatic. His therapist had to tell him, and even then, he undermined the term, saying that it was a dramatic word. Charlie was seemingly unaware of the affect that his experiences had on him. This is indicative of Se > Si. Se is focused on what is happening right now. He is emotionally aware in the present, and even if he is uncomfortable speaking about it, he knows when he is feeling bad. But his inability to trace those feelings to the root (his subjective experiences) indicates devaluation of Si.

He also appears in various other novels written by Alice Oseman. The main character, a Year 10 who wound up in the same form as his soon-to-be Best Friend and Love Interest, Nick Nelson. He is somewhat shy and rather anxious, though proves capable of keeping his cool most of the time. He loves reading and playing the drums. He is suffering from severe eating disorders and mental issues.
