What personality type is Nie Huaisang? Nie Huaisang is an ISFP personality type in MBTI, 9w8 - sp/sx - in Enneagram, in Big 5, in Socionics.
I understand the INFJ votes - it was my initial vote too - but upon further review I believe he's very much an ISFP. He was seemingly sent into an intense Fi-Ni loop after his brother's murder, but his life before the trauma is very much in line with ISFP behaviour. It's not just that he's interested in art and fashion; it's his determination to speak and act in a way that flies in the face of everything his sect values, it's his constant rebellions against his brother (including randomly going off on an adventure with his friends and showing back up weeks later with hella attitude and no apology despite wwx and jc literally begging their parents' forgiveness lmao), it's his relentless pursuit of unique personal interests (bird catching, fan painting) at the expense of his reputation, it's his determination to forge his own unique identity irrespective of tradition. He wasn't just soaking in the noble life - he was going out of his way to rebel against expectations and live aligned with his personal identity even before it benefited him to do so. Also - I'd recommend watching his prequel-ish movie if you haven't yet. His Fi is even more clear as he stands up to his brother and all the Nie disciples to do what's right (re the saber tombs), going so far as to put himself in danger (rare, for Huisang) to support his moral convictions. Not to say that Fe users aren't willing/able to stand up for their ethical values, but the way in which he did so was very Fi; instead of 'this is wrong, we need to find a new system that doesn't put people in danger', his reaction is 'this is wrong, screw every single one of you, you need to stop it all right now or i'm going to go run on the murder bridge and possibly die just to prove to you how messed up it is!' He never even tried for a moment to fit in, his entire life. This remains even when he goes deep into Ni later in the series: let's compare him to Jin Guangyao, a Fe user. While both where plotting and performing to conceal their malevolent designs, Guangyao tried to win favour by blending in, by pleasing everyone and being 'perfect'. Yet Huaisang, even when putting on a performance, couldn't help but draw the attention of everyone in the room by exaggerating his authentic personality quirks to distract from his subtle plans. Fe scheming vs Fi scheming, right there. So yes - he clearly has very well developed Ni, but at his core I think he's a pretty reliable ISFP.
Biography
The current head of the Qinghe Nie Clan. As the younger brother of the late clan leader Nie Mingjue, he rarely strives towards anything, maintains an attitude of ineptitude in presiding over the sect, and often asks Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao for help.
