What personality type is David Ross / "Beyond The Sea"? David Ross / "Beyond The Sea" is an ENFJ personality type in MBTI, 2w3 - sp/sx - 269 in Enneagram, SCOEI in Big 5, ESE in Socionics.

ENFJ is the best fit for David! *Long analysis, but relevant and interesting for the ESTP believers, I swear! 😊 An ENFJ villain would be capable of convincing anyone, manipulating the purest, and taking advantage of trust when earned. ENFJ's tend to feel lost if they have no one around, and when he lost everyone he loved, he lost it everything. ENFJ's have the ability to put themselves in other people's shoes, and to be able to achieve this fantasy in the realest form allowed him to escape his own life and problems. On the other hand, the fantasy evolved, and so did the opportunities that came with it. While it seems unlikely for an ENFJ to become morally corrupt and take advantage of these new possibilities, let's not forget he saw the worst of humanity before his eyes, which lead him to probably lose belief in his values. His virtues couldn't save the ones he loved, so why would it matter to be good? So he got tempted to go overboard with his own ideas of what was right. Plus, committing adultery wasn't going to make him as bad as the murderer of his family (we'll talk about his murders at the end, im not contradicting myself♥️). David was able to analyze Lana (ISFJ wife) and her needs in a few days (classic ENFJ skill) and tried to manipulate her into making him feel loved, while also giving her what she was lacking : He made her feel seen! (adding her to the painting, asking questions, being romantic, showing shared interests in books, etc.) Observation on the book part. The ENFJ typing fits in the way he attempted to charm his partner’s wife by his novel choice. David used common interest to get closer to her, but he did not only notice Lana's love for literature (as an ESTP would plot it), he got deeper by sending signs in Lana's "ISFJ language", while using ENFJ manipulation. He first hooked her interest by recommending a genre she didn’t know about (knowing an ISFJ would want to develop their culture and would be turned on by cultivated people). He also chose the book “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress”, which sends a literal message only with the title, but I looked up the synopsis and it’s deeper than that. Long story short, the 1966 novel describes a future where both the earth and the moon are populated, the moon being a world where polyamory is the norm. That would plant seeds in Lana’s mind, making her wonder if that was a hidden message from David, and opening up her mind about libertarians ideals. On top of that, it would make her think of David while Cliff would be asleep right next to her, reinforcing the secret part of their connection. David did not even have to plan this! He's an ENFJ, and these ways to get closer to others are natural to them. Anyways, David's motives of seduction were self serving : need for deep connections, support, intimacy and trust, which all translated in a desire for sex, since it technically provides a solution to all these voids. However, David being an ENFJ, acting out of selfishness triggered his fear is to be seen as a bad person, so he sold the affair to Lana, Cliff, and himself as a way to also fulfill what Lana was missing. Turns out David’s analysis was right, but she declined the offer and directly hit his worst fear of being called out on why he was a bad person. That caused him to go deeper into his shadow (INFP with a Ti grip, and an *Fe-Se loop) and tried to convince Cliff that he was still a good person. (Note that the INFP shadow started as soon as his family got massacred, we can see it when Cliff tried to comfort Dave the first time.) *ENFJ’s go into that Fe-Se loop of being obsessive and seeking validation that they’re seen as a good friend/person when in their INFP shadow. That is seen when he needs to shake Cliff’s hand every time he comes back to the ship, when he wants to please Cliff and Lana with the painting, etc. When Cliff didn’t give validation to David after he learned about the possible affair, and told him that even Lana called him a monster, David fell deeper into his shadow, and turned into the “daemon ENFJ” (ESTP, Te fulled). In daemon state, the ENFJ wants to destroy the people that rejected them by turning everyone on their side against the opponent, in order to make the enemy look as evil as possible… That's exactly what happened at the end when he framed Cliff as the killer of his own family. Doing that will also draw validation to David, that is now seen by the whole planet as an innocent victim trapped in outer space with a "MONSTER". After that ENFJ checkmate, David STILL tries to get Cliff back, inviting him to sit next to him… To be honest, I thought we would see David play therapist and try to convince Cliff that there would be no hope for him and that he should probably kill himself. That would be suicide for David since the ship can only work with two people. He wouldn't be able to live with himself, but would still look innocent. So yes, a broken ENFJ in his final shadow form. Scary.
