I love Manta. He's captain Ahab, and Aquaman is his whale. Only with a twist - Manta has no actual reason to hate Aquaman. Every tragic backstory he gives is an intentionally ridiculous and contradictory lie. There is no purpose to his hatred, it just is. He is hatred incarnate. There is nothing he wants, and nothing he values except making Aquaman's life misery. He took over a terrorist organisations on the verge of world domination and used their resources solely to mess with Aquaman. When Aquaman died, Manta took up a job at a fishery, where he could gut fish all day long in complete silence. The moment he learned Aquaman had been revived, he murdered everyone around him and put the suit back on in order to torment the oceans once again. Manta is a man of focus, determination and sheer will. "I must kill the sea."
