Usually, we're not being distant on purpose, it's just because we genuinely can't express other thing or maybe we seriously don't feel that emotion. Sometimes people are very nice and kind to me yet I can't tell they or let them know that I appreciate that good vibe. Dozens of times I've gotten told by people I thought were friends with me that I'm scary (as if i was a murderer) intimidating or straight up icy cold with no feelings. I'm not a particularly sensitive person but I'm no psychopath either! When I really appreciate someone I don't show it because I assume they take it for granted. If you're the only person I ever interact with it definitely means something.
