Thanks to my friend “ Shōgun ” for helping me prepare this analysis. 🫶🏻 He put in just as much effort as I did, and this analysis is as much his as it is mine. (1) 𝗦𝗘 – 𝗧𝗜 – 𝗙𝗘 「𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗣」 𝗦𝗣/𝗦𝗫 𝟴𝘄𝟳 Naranjo’s “ Self-Preservation 8: ‘Satisfaction’ ” The 8 who wears their armor the tightest is the Self-Preservation 8. The word that corresponds to this is “satisfaction.” “I must have this, this is mine, I have to possess it,” they say. What dominates is not so much taking what they want, but their inability to tolerate the frustration of not having it. In this sense, they resemble the Sexual/Type 1 character, who is similarly fixated on desire; however, Type 1 is quite different from Type 8: one is hyper-social, the other completely antisocial. One places great importance on rules, the other hardly cares about them. The Self-Preservation 8 is focused on the satisfaction of needs. They don’t talk much; they are like a lion—like a lion that only moves when it is hungry. They try to satisfy an insatiable hunger and then sleep for the rest of the day; they are immensely imposing. They are entirely serious; there is no idle chatter or wordplay in their speech. Their needs can be described as an exaggerated selfishness. These people know how to get things done and are also skilled at negotiating in a way that puts them ahead of everyone else. They resemble a used-car salesman—this is the art and talent of the Self-Preservation 8. But this is also a necessity for them: they are masters of survival. While this description could apply to all 8s, it best defines the Self-Preservation 8. They know how to survive even under the harshest conditions; they know how to do their job—and how to get away with what they’ve done. Possible childhood/growth story of Type 8: Eights survive childhood through their strong stance. They usually grow up feeling, unconsciously, that the people who take care of and nurture them are rejecting them. They understand that in order to receive enough attention within the family, they need to play a complementary role. They become strong, tough, and independent individuals capable of taking care of others. As a result, many Eights carry adult responsibilities or burdens from an early age. To take on this role, they learn to suppress their childhood fears, vulnerabilities, and emotional needs. They think the world is full of people trying to control them and that it is unfair. They have experienced a childhood in which the strong are respected and the weak are oppressed. Eights see themselves as protectors. In the early stages of their lives, they try to please people but learn that their innocence is exploited and that showing weakness leads to being hurt. Type 8 (without sticking to instinctual subtypes): Main traits: independent, strong, determined, stubborn, skilled in leadership, protective, ambitious. Enneagram 8s present a confident, assertive, and determined image to others. They can be argumentative and intimidating; standing up for what they believe in and protecting those weaker than them is important. One of their greatest fears is being vulnerable and powerless. They want to remain strong in the face of challenges and avoid depending on anyone. They do not hesitate to step forward, lead, and make difficult decisions. They are not afraid of conflict. They seek respect and may struggle to suppress anger, acting impulsively when provoked. ── 𝖶𝖾 𝗐𝗈𝗇'𝗍 𝖽𝖾𝗅𝗏𝖾 𝗍𝗈𝗈 𝖽𝖾𝖾𝗉𝗅𝗒 𝗂𝗇𝗍𝗈 𝖼𝗈𝗋𝖾 𝟪 𝗐𝗁𝗂𝗅𝖾 𝖾𝗑𝗉𝗅𝖺𝗂𝗇𝗂𝗇𝗀 𝟪, 𝖺𝗌 𝗐𝖾'𝗅𝗅 𝖺𝗅𝗌𝗈 𝖻𝖾 𝖽𝗂𝗌𝖼𝗎𝗌𝗌𝗂𝗇𝗀 𝗌𝗎𝖻𝗍𝗒𝗉𝖾𝗌 𝖺𝗇𝖽 𝗐𝗂𝗇𝗀𝗌. In order to meet both Ian's and his own needs, he first participates in illegal boxing matches and later joins a gang. He also considers Ian and provides care for him. He does not hesitate to be protective. Taejoon even tries to personally protect Ian from David Kim (Chapter 55). This is a model of an Enneagram 8 as an independent protector who can take care of others. Leaving the protective family and following Ian from a young age to gain independence also supports the possible childhood story of an Ennea 8. The suppressed (or rather hidden) emotional needs reaching a breaking point are particularly evident in Chapter 83. He internalized that value is measured by strength and that he must ignore weaknesses or prevent them from causing harm to avoid being oppressed. Also, the shift of Type 8 toward disintegration into Type 2 (Type 2’s conditioned self-worth judgment) is clearly evident in the line in Chapter 83:
