Personality

What personality type is Mischa Mayakovsky? Mischa Mayakovsky is an ENTJ personality type in MBTI, 8w7 - sp/so - 835 in Enneagram, in Big 5, SLE in Socionics.

Here’s why I’d say ENTJ: Te: Mayakovsky’s extremely result-oriented and pragmatical in his explanations. As a teaching style, he doesn’t rely on theory depending on conditions for magic, and wants his students to understand magic in a way that’ll make them “great magicians”—meaning “efficient spellcasters” to him. He’s put incredible protection spells around his domain, and seems to build all himself in order to make sure that everything works. However, he’s extremely critical of people who don’t meet his expectations, and regularly taunts Brakebills North for what he considers lower teaching of magic. A lot of people despise him, but no one ever said he was incompetent in any way—actually, most agree he’s at least a “very good” magician. Ni: A visionary man, who builds a huge magic reservoir in provision of the eventual disappearance of magic (which actually happens later in the series). Mayakovsky sees the long-term implication of his choices, and his students’, and preemptively acts on it. For instance, seeing how limited and still in danger Penny will remain should he keep his anchoring tattoo, he explains the implications to the latter and removes the tattoo himself before teaching Penny how to travel at least safely, and more precisely. He also uses the brief period of time he has to teach his students a way that’ll mark them for years, and for the ones who pass his exam, will make them a lot more efficient while learning and using magic in the future. Se: Mayakovsky builds and does almost everything himself, including his installation at Brakebills South. He isn’t bothered by the extreme weather conditions—and in fact, uses them to teach—, and could be considered a man of field when he deems it necessary. He also enjoins his students to practice magic (for instance, having them practice the Hammer Charm of Legrand and Bujold’s Sorcerous Nail Extraction over and over until perfectly assimilated), much more than to just study it theoretically, and has them experiment magic through a concrete application with his exam. Fi: Mayakovsky does what seems correct to him, following his perception of a situation and his own moral code. For instance, he doesn’t hesitate to help Emily Greenstreet repair her mistake, even if he knows that means he’ll probably loose his career. After this event, when given the choice, he choses to keep teaching, be it on Antarctic, so that he can make sure his students won’t do the same mistakes as him. Though he rarely if ever opens his heart, he ultimately wants the best for his students, and accepts them hating him if it ensures they become greater magicians than him. —— A few notes: — In spite of Mayakovsky drinking a lot because of his regrets, I wouldn’t say he’s a Si-user. As aforementioned, he takes a lot of decisions to have a long-term impact. I’d even say he makes a point into ensuring the same mistakes aren’t made again ever, and seems to always look for ways to improve his arts and his students’: definitely Ni using to me. — And he’s more busy doing things preemptively than enjoying the present, and teaches to do the same, so Ni-dom or Ni-aux. — However, if we consider his alcoholism as the result of a Shadow function, due to it resulting of a trauma (or at least a mistake provoking heavy regrets), then it’d be either Si-trickster or Si-demon, which matches xNTJ. He doesn’t seem to want to fight against alcoholism, may even have given it up, and doesn’t care about what others think of him about it, which looks more like Si-trickster to me. Si-trickster implies Se-ter, so ENTJ. — Te-dom instead of Ni-dom because he’s focused on doing and achieving, and spends a lot more time doing magic or teaching than just retreating to think and plan what’s gonna happen next. He’s a man of action, and ensures he’s doing it efficiently, _while_ taking the consequences in account. — He uses pragmatic (though harsh) methods to teach magic, based on evidences he can demonstrate easily, but keeps his emotions to himself and remains secretive—in spite of alcohol making him more prompt to anger and bluntness. Also, he doesn’t care if his students dislike him, as long as they earn some skill. Therefore, TeFi instead of TiFe, and Te before Fi which stays in the background. —— TL;DR: He’s a highly skilled magician who wants his students to become at least as good as him, and uses concrete though harsh (almost abusive) methods to teach how to do magic efficiently. He’s heavily involved in his job, does most necessary things himself, always tries to take consequences in account, and doesn’t care about his image if it ensures his students become better (as magicians and as humans) than him. Please feel free to doubt, ask, and to constructively argument! I’d love to improve!
