What personality type is Phil Burbank? Phil Burbank is an ISTJ personality type in MBTI, 8w9 - sx/so - 845 in Enneagram, RLOEI in Big 5, SLE in Socionics.
The fact I’m the first to vote ISTJ is absolutely criminal lol This man’s Si usage is through the roof. 1. In this two hour movie, where Phil is the main character, 90% of what he says is about Bronco Henry. Phil has built his ranch around what Bronco taught him. He constantly references what Bronco used to do and how he used to do it to his underlings. 2. He keeps Bronco’s saddle, spurs and magazines. Whilst this isn’t evidence of Si by itself, when we look at the way Phil treats those objects (the saddle), he almost seems to be worshipping them. I think there’s some Si significance in the action of washing the saddle, however I can’t quite put it into words. Whereas an Ni user (the consensus as I’m writing this is INTJ) may see the saddle as a symbol for the future he’s envisioned, an Si user will see it as a symbol of the past. Phil never talks about how he plans to expand his ranch or change things to profit. An Ni user would most definitely sell the hides instead of burning them. An Ni user would see the benefit of washing up and coming to the dinner with the governor to gain influence and perhaps find new trading possibilities. An Si user would see that the ranch is is doing fine, so there is no need for improvement. 3. More Si visible when Phil and George talk about Rose for the first time. Phil assumes Rose is after their fortune because his previous encounters with women were when he was little and was introduced to a group of girls, whose parents (or perhaps the girls themselves) wanted to be married into a more fortunate family. His opinion on Rose came from past experiences — Si. 4. Phil’s ‘affection’ (if you can call it that) for Peter significantly increased after Peter said the hill looked like a barking dog. Bronco said the hill looked like a barking dog. Phil’s intense attachment to Bronco caused Phil to look for things in the present that reminded him of Bronco. So Peter associating the hill with a dog the way Bronco did caused Phil’s Si to ignite — he felt like he was with Bronco, perhaps in a different form, but the mind seemed the same, at least in that moment. 5. Finally, the scene when Phil was lying on the ground with Bronco’s handkerchief (? — I think that’s what it was) in his hands. That scene is almost a physical representation of Introverted Sensation. He drags the cloth all over his skin in an effort to feel as if Bronco was still with him. He’s trying to bring the past into the present through touch and (maybe) smell. Beautiful scene imo. Not all ISTJs are like this, of course — Phil overindulges in his Si as a result of grief. Now, Te. I have less evidence of Te, possibly because I was more focused on spotting Si. Nevertheless: 1. Te-Fi axis, not Fe-Ti, because right at the beginning when he meets Peter, he says some things that are a little bit harsh, which makes Rose cry. Later, George tells Phil he shouldn’t have done that because it made Rose cry. Te>Fe in his response when he said “I said her boy needed to snap out of it and get human. Pointed it out, that’s all. She should damn well know.” Phil didn’t see anything wrong with saying it because it was true. George, who I think is a high Fe user, had an opposing opinion. Therefore Fe<Te.
