When Zhou Yu realized that Sun Ce was a true friend, he directly gifted him a house. When Liu Bei met with Zhou Yu, Zhou Yu specifically found a reason for him to come and pay his respects in person. This was completely unreasonable in terms of status. At this time, Liu Bei was not only the Left General of the court but also a member of the royal family. Even if we take a step back, Liu Bei was on the same level as Zhou Yu's lord, Sun Quan. Zhou Yu did this to demonstrate his authority to Liu Bei, ensuring that Liu Bei recognized his own position: a defeated general seeking help from others. Zhou Yu's strategic proposal was to first defeat Liu Zhang in the west, then launch a northern expedition against Zhang Lu, and finally engage in a decisive battle with Cao Cao. His goal was never to maintain the continuation of the Han Dynasty (which was politically correct and aligned with values at the time), but to make his lord Sun Quan the emperor. The reason was that he believed Sun Ce and Sun Quan treated him well, especially in "listening to his opinions and fully adopting his suggestions." Interestingly, both Liu Bei and Cao Cao considered Zhou Yu to be the greatest threat. They conveyed the message to Sun Quan through conversations and letters that "Zhou Yu will not be content to play a supporting role forever," attempting to create discord between them. Fortunately, this could not undermine the high level of trust between Sun Quan and Zhou Yu. 《荆州先德传》曰:周瑜领南郡,以庞士元名重,州里所信,乃逼为功曹,任以大事。瑜垂拱而已。 Zhou Yu forced Pang Tong to become his subordinate by some means(乃逼为功曹), and thus easily governed the area he was responsible for(瑜垂拱而已). What a domineering man.

Biografie

Zhou Yu (Chinese: 周瑜) (175–210), courtesy name Gongjin (Chinese: 公瑾), was a Chinese military general and strategist serving under the warlord Sun Ce in the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. After Sun Ce died in the year 200, he continued serving under Sun Quan, Sun Ce's younger brother and successor. Zhou Yu is primarily known for his leading role in defeating the numerically superior forces of the northern warlord Cao Cao at the Battle of Red Cliffs (the Battle of Chi Bi) in late 208, and again at the Battle of Jiangling in 209. Zhou Yu's victories served as the bedrock of Sun Quan's regime, which in 222 became Eastern Wu, one of the Three Kingdoms. Zhou Yu did not live to see Sun Quan's enthronement, however, as he died at the age of 35 in 210 while preparing to invade Yi Province (modern Sichuan and Chongqing).
