god, what is with the people on this app and typing ESFPs as xSFJs? Se (dom): josh is your classic live in the moment, fun-loving dude-bro. this is understated in a lot of ways, but also exaggerated throughout the show: (my Se dom ahh forgot season 1 already, lol i’ll come back to this) when he was offered a job at homebase he was overly concerned with giving people a performance and “making it cool unlike greg.” then there’s his impulsivity which is best seen through his relationship-hopping based on whoever is treating him the best at any giving moment and his emotional state (Se-Fi). joining the priesthood was also Se-Fi impulsivity, all because he couldn’t deal with reality and wanted to escape his responsibilities. when the priest confronted him with the reality of becoming a priest his response demonstrated his Ni inferior, showing that he hadn’t really thought his decision through properly and was acting from a place of impulse and emotion. lastly valencia herself—as well as his parents—said that josh isn’t very future focused or ambitious. implying that he’s okay with a sort of simple, carefree, fun life where contentment is the standard. Fi (parent): josh cares a lot about social dynamics, coupled with his Se he comes across as very easygoing to the point where it SEEMS he places group harmony over everything. but there are several instances throughout the series where he pushes back because his authenticity and what he values is compromised or ignored e.g wanting to pick the dining room table, wanting to pick valencia’s ring and propose his way, wanting to go to camp every summer, etc. the entire season 1 was about him pushing back against valencia and being true to himself. he also fights hard to stay true to his personalised code of ethics throughout season 1, resisting the urge to cheat on valencia or do anything he wouldn’t be able to live with. similar to rebecca, throughout the season 1 we see him fighting to do things that he values and that bring him joy (e.g continuing to go to camp) even if it brings a lack of harmony to his relationships. there are also instances of unhealthy Fi which manifests as self-absorption (which multiple people called him out on) and equating his emotions as objective reality, rejecting external facts and feedback (which he does in almost every season) there’s is no evidence of him drawing his sense of right from wrong from the collective. he may feel discomfort when there’s no harmony in his relationships, but he feels even greater discomfort when there’s no harmony within himself. this isn’t necessarily an example of Fi but there are at least two occasions (season 2 when greg breaks the news that he’s an alcoholic and season 3 when rebecca is hospitalised for almost unaliving herself) where he doesn’t read the room and makes something that clearly isn’t about him about him and father brah (Fe dom), hector (Fe dom), greg (Fe inferior), heather (Fe inferior), white josh (Fe inferior), paula (Fe dom) and even valencia (who has no Fe whatsoever) are all frustrated with how self-involved he is and how they have to tell him that “for once, this is not about you.” even then he still thinks it’s about him and tries to offer comfort/support in a way that feels right to him but is completely inappropriate. he clearly isn’t adept at reading the room and the needs of others Te: the episode where he organised the stock at work post break-up because he’s a girlfriend boyfriend who doesn’t know how to be alone is a good example of tertiary Te seeking organisation and efficiency when feeling out of control. Ni (inferior): again, not very future focused, somewhat aimlessly and even a little insecure about it throughout season 1 especially right before rebecca helped him get his dream job at aloha tech. in szn 3 he says, “i’m spiralling. i have no apartment, no relationship, no career goals. i just feel like there’s no ground under me” back to the relationship-hopping, not really considering the ramifications of his actions when he falls for a girl just because she’s nice to him in the midst of relationship issues with whoever he’s currently dating. when he was newly single, he literally sang a song about not enjoying being alone with his thoughts and the gloomy nature of his thoughts at the time are a good example of Ni inferior. also, he literally had to say a prayer to god to help him be interested in the “god stuff” (metaphysics) Ti trickster: “when people are using introverted thinking to give you a critique or hone-in on the accuracy of what you’re saying, you can feel like they’re being ridiculous, over-the-top, pedantic, or silly. you may inwardly (or outwardly) poke fun at them, make light of what they’re saying, or use humor to deflect the attention away from yourself or invalidate their argument in some way.” josh does this ALL THE TIME, especially with heather and greg who are both Ti doms
