He was most brutal (& perhaps the craziest) businessman in history Once his competitors (Charles Morgan and C. K. Garrison) broke some contract altogether and betrayed the status quo. Vanderbilt found out about this mutiny and got deeply hurt by this backstabbing act and wrote a letter to his competitors, "Gentlemen, you have undertaken to cheat me. I won’t sue you, for law is too slow. I’ll ruin you." A year later these men paid Vanderbilt $1 million for leaving the business he started (and operated at a loss) just to get revenge.

Cornelius Vanderbilt (May 27, 1794 – January 4, 1877) was an American business magnate and philanthropist who built his wealth in railroads and shipping. Born poor and having only a mediocre education, Vanderbilt used perseverance, intelligence and luck to work his way into leadership positions in the inland water trade and invest in the rapidly growing railroad industry. Nicknamed "The Commodore", he is known for owning the New York Central Railroad.
