There has never been a single successful society that did not have some kind of exclusive marriage contract between either one man and one woman or one man and multiple women. This is due mainly to the fact that parental ownership of a child between one man and one woman--as opposed to communal ownership in polyamorous societies--imbues responsibility upon the parents for their act of creation. This overall leads to less overpopulation(increased development per person)and more parental involvement as each parent becomes responsible for the success of his own child.

Monogamy (/məˈnɒɡəmi/ mə-NOG-ə-mee) is a form of dyadic relationship in which an individual has only one partner during their lifetime. Alternately, only one partner at any one time (serial monogamy) — as compared to the various forms of non-monogamy (e.g., polygamy or polyamory). The term is also applied to the social behavior of some animals, referring to the state of having only one mate at any one time. A monogamous relationship can be sexual or emotional, but it's usually both. Many modern relationships are monogamous.
