This update is to address some ISTP inconsistencies. First off, you don’t need high Se to swing a sword skillfully. This is a PDB myth. Such skills are learned (granted, some types will be more natural at it, yet INFJ is a very adaptable type). Just for an example, I happened to grow up with mainly ISTPs for friends. But I beat them in target shooting, video games, and was just as good and better on soccer, bicycles, speed boat driving and later on motorcycles. It is mentioned for the sake of argument, not to make some boast. (Dominant Ni can rather make you read and anticipate even immediate physical occurrences immediately ahead of time.) For me the inherit perfectionism always made me strive to do better. To achieve excellence. The downside experienced with inferior Se is rather situations such as if having to navigate crowds of people particularly in social settings. That can be a drain. But not necessarily. Fe. ISTPs have inferior Fe. Yet there are so many scenes in the movies where Arangar’s high Fe is shown. His strong compassion with the Hobbits for one. Then the argument goes “but he lived long with the Elves so his low ISTP Fe must have developed highly”. That is a rather weak, inconsistent and illogical argument. A fallacy. If age turns low Fe into high Fe, where are the real life examples? Do old ISTPs just turn full of Fe compassion with age? No. Frankly it is rather a dumb argument, as well as contradictory, because it seeks to essentially make INFJ Fe out of a supposed ISTP low Fe. Is Occam’s razor really needed here? (Yes, INFJs can be similar to ‘INTJ blunt’ at times) And the romance with Arwen, what other examples are there really for an ISTP male engaging in that kind of a deep romance? (But don’t get me wrong, I would feel glad to see any male ISTP expressing emotions in that way.) And then the “but Aragorn didn’t show emotion when Gandalf fell with the Balrog”. Actually he did which was seen in the movie, but please allow me to add some insight here. As an INFJ I can have much compassion with others. But I can also be tired with people and sort of turn it off. It is more like you have compassion for whomever you may have compassion for. Nevertheless I can also think like this, kind of seeing any situation from the outside in, objectively: “Oh, now this tragic event happened and we are all required to feel sad and cry”. No, I am way ahead of that, seeing things objectively. To me nothing needs to be in the traditional way of things. If I was there I would have told the following to hurry up. There was nothing more that could be done for Gandalf there and then, and the fellowship needed to get to the elves. Gandalf had told them to “Run, you fools!” Sentimentality at that instance would only be a hindrance. Think of the matured INFJ as a ‘psychologist’ who reads everyone. And who can address grief issues from an objective perspective. The time for sentimentality would have to be held off at least until reaching the elves. Then an INFJ might have assembled a therapy group so everyone could address their grief, and the INFJ would be taking notes for the next session. Compare it with INFJ Holden Ford in the Mindhunter series too if you will. Empathizing with others can be much more about reading other people and seeing where they come from, not necessarily feel all compassionate with them. (It can be either or, or both for that matter.) It is too evident that Aragorn is a turbulent INFJ character, and the error here is that these ISTP arguments essentially seeks to align him with INFJ attributes. Arguments for Aragorn’s Ni-Dom has already been addressed well by some others here. Typologies should be with an objective mindset to get it correct to the best of ability. Not seeking some kind of validation to identify movie characters with one’s own type. But if needing it that way ISTPs may turn to ISTP Indiana Jones. He was a childhood hero of mine, but I would never seek to type him INFJ for that reason. That would just ruin the entire point of MBTI typologies. How about we all try to be objective and get better at it that way. Looking at MBTI types as a whole will then be essential, not just trying to isolate cognitive functions and attributing them to this and that occurrence, while ignoring other ingredients of a character or person as a whole.

Aragorn, also known as Elessar and Strider, was a great Ranger and warrior, and as Isildur's heir he bore the shards of Narsil, reforged and renamed Andúril, Flame of the West, in the War of the Ring. Aragorn must overcome his self-doubt to claim the kingship.
