Coming from d&d, warlocks tipically sign a pact to acquire something in return. They are viewed as individuals who gained their power through the pact and may as well have been driven to signing it, e.g.: they have been rejected and view as inferior people their entire life. Warlocks want something that they cannot attain and are ready to sacrifice their very being for it. They have been controlled their entire life and don't want to feel like that anymore. It's not just power for the sake of it, it's power to show they are superior to others. They are willing to sacrifice more than others to attain their ultimate goal.
