He was the best king for his people. While there was a lot of poverty during his rule, it wasn't because of a lack of effort on his part. He was deeply beloved and thousands of soldiers and civilians wept and waved their hands as he and his wife departed into exile. I hope he gets Canonized in the near future. LONG LIVE THE KING!!!

Biografia

Francis II was born in Naples in 1836, the son of Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies and Maria Christina of Savoy. His father ensured that he had a thorough religious education although at the expense of his political and military education. Ferdinand chose Maria Sophia of Bavaria for Francis' wife. Francis ascended to the throne in 1859, following his father's death. He was initially timid, suspicious, and of weak character, which let to him getting overruled in both family matters and at the royal court. He also lost his only child, who fell ill and passed away at 10 months old. Despite this, he was very humane and magnanimous, with a deep sense of faith in God and duty to his subjects, especially those in need. Form the start of his reign, he appointed special committees to improve the prisons, granted greater local autonomy to municipalities, and streamlined bureaucracy. He granted customs franchise to Palermo and Messina, and established a Commercial Court and savings banks in Catania. He also founded universities, high schools, boarding schools, and built railroads, and churches wherever they were most needed. He even improved waterworks and irrigation across the kingdom. Sadly he wasn't able to complete all his projects as in late 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi began his "Expedition of The Thousand" and invaded the Two Sicilies. The Neapolitan army was forced to retreat following a tactical stalemate at the battle of the Volturno river, and together with the royal couple it's remnants took refuge in the fortress of Gaeta where they were besieged until Francis surrendered in February of 1861. To everyone's astonishment both Francis and Maria remained extremely calm, and showed impressive strength of character despite the continuous bombardment. Upon his surrender, the royal couple, to the dismay of the people, was dethroned and exiled. Thus the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies came to an end. Francis and his wife became guests of Pope Pius IX in Rome, but were forced to leave again when Garibaldi conquered Rome in late 1870. They then spent their lives wandering through France and Austria-Hungary. Francis II of the Royal House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, passed away at Arco in Trentino(now north- eastern Italy, but at the time Austria-Hungary), in 1894, aged 58. He has an ongoing cause for Canonization and was declared a "Servant of God" by Pope Francis.
