Seeing Homelander typed as an ENTJ is starting to make my eyes hurt. So anyways, Homelander is an ENFJ. Why? Allow me to explain in the four parts of my essay. (Part 1: Introduction) Throughout the entirety of the show, Homelander has demonstrated a predominant focus on intrapersonal frameworks (Fe) over external mechanical causality (Te). Which is to say, he cares more about the emotional resonance and social cohesion of himself and others than he cares about how the world works from an emotional detached/impersonal standpoint. Since the beginning of the series Homelander was portrayed as having a strong Je desire to maintain order and harmony among the group that he leads, but how does he do so? Through reference to the external sentimental value of society and doing his best to align his appearance and actions with what is expected by society (e.g., him talking about how many people everyone saved when The Seven start arguing over money and points at the table). Other examples in season 1 would be his keeping an affable and caring demeanor towards his teammates, despite making thinly veiled threats with them (we see this in both his meetings with A-Train and the Deep). Some argue that Homelander is an ENTJ who is simply manipulative, but here’s the issue, Homelander identity is defined by Fe, he lacks any notable amount of Fi. All his thoughts and ideas are people oriented rather than detached from them, not the clinical system that EXTJs often use. Now, I hear you saying, “what about enneagram 3”, well, I think that’s one major reason why Homelander comes across as an ENTJ. 3s are described as being heart/image driven types who want to be valued by others not by who they are personally (4) or how loving they are to their community (2), but rather through detached, materialistic achievement. Giving something of a “cold” and distant edge to them. Not wanting to be seen as “regular people'', but for their success. As to why he's not a Te dom is what I will explain more in-depth. (Part 2: Fe vs Fi) While Fi users create a sentimental framework that helps evaluate information based on personal judgment, Homelander instead uses the inverse. Every plight regarding his identity or “moral evaluation” is reference to the group dynamic, the emotional system of society and the persona the Vought as well as his fans have created for him. Not his own ideals that were forged via experience and reflection, but the destiny that society had bestowed upon him. But before I continue this needs to be clear: having Fe dominant does not mean that you’re a good person, the same way that having Fi dominant doesn’t mean that you’re selfish (e.g., Hughie). Fe is a system that cares about positive emotional feedback of a group, connecting with others via shared ideals, and mindfulness of what the tribe expects from the individual. Fi cares about positive emotional feedback from individuals, connecting with others via their personal experience, and self-actualization (Homelander doesn’t have a “self” concept, his entire character is based on what other people see him as and want from him). Fe is more concerned than Fi with *appearing* like a good person, but unfortunately, human beings aren’t mechanical and ultimately fall for selfish aspirations. Homelander’s extroverted reality consists of Fe-Se, his adherence to aligning himself with the external emotional dynamic (Fe) and sensory based opportunism (Se), always trying to change on the fly. His desire for everyone to be happy and smiling and to make connections with his son in season 2 through his metaphysical, social ideals (FeNi) is a hallmark of a classic ENFJ character. He just so happens to be an ******* because of his upbringing. And he snaps when people’s emotional responses are negative.
Biographie
Homelander is the main antagonist in the TV adaptation of The Boys. He is the leader of The Seven, and the prime enemy of Billy Butcher, the leader of The Boys. Homelander is considered the greatest superhero alive: not only can he fly, but he also has super strength and super hearing, and he can see through almost anything with his x-ray vision and then destroy it with his laser eyes. On the surface, he’s affable, modest, and sincere, but just like mere mortals, even superheroes have secrets...
