The first words we hear from Costello are: "I don't want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me." This is the essential establishing line for Costello's character, illustrating Te and Se, with a preference for the former over the latter. Se seeks to skillfully navigate the objective world. Te seeks to impose order on it. Compare this quote with a quote from Ayn Rand (another high-Te type): "While animals survive by adjusting themselves to their background, man survives by adjusting his background to himself." We also have the following additional quotations, indicative of strong Te and/or Se: • "A man makes his own way. No one gives it to you. You have to take it." • "When you decide to be something, you can be it." • "A man could look at anything and make something out of it. For instance, I look at you and I think: What could I use you for?" It should also be noted that we see an excessive amount of Se-related activity throughout the movie (smoking, booze, cocaine, sex, opera, the d*ldo prank in the theater, drawing sketches all the time, eating a fly???, and continuing to run his drug business despite the fact that he doesn't need the money – presumably for the thrill of it). This is all relevant to Costello's character, and by itself, this evidence would point us in the direction of an ES-P typing, but as everything is designed to flow from the point of the first establishing line above, I think we can chalk this up to overactive tertiary Se. Otherwise, we have to conclude that Costello is actually – contrary to what he believes – a product of his environment.
