While I'm personally glad more people are starting to see Mikan as an ESFP (and for those who are still on the fence about Ne vs Se dom for Mikan, I have a guide to all 8 cognitive functions here: https://www.personality-database.com/en-US/post/8092787?boardID=327791; despite being in a world with fantastical powers, Mikan does not use Ne or Si in the series imo), I would really like to hone in on how sx 2 is the perfect enneatype for Mikan and how so 7 does not describe her motivations at all. Official descriptions for sx 2: https://wiki.personality-database.com/books/enneagram/page/sexual-2-in-detail Official descriptions for so 7: https://wiki.personality-database.com/books/enneagram/page/social-7-in-detail Too often it seems are people ready to type a friendly/energetic character (especially ExxPs) as an E7, despite none of the 7 subtypes being able to accurately explain that character's motivations and actions. The underlying theme of E7 (which has the passion of gluttony) is to distract oneself from negative emotions, especially fear and boredom (as E7 is part of the head/fear triad). So 7s (countertype) in particular distract themselves from negative emotions by *temporarily sacrificing their immediate desires/gluttony* and performing services that benefit humanity. This isn't Mikan, or at the very least, this isn't her core. Rather sx 2 (which has the passion of pride) matches Mikan perfectly. Mikan gets *extremely* attached to certain individuals in her life (and this is much easier to understand if you think of Hotaru as her special person) and uproots her entire life just to be with those people. Whenever she feels her vast efforts are unappreciated, by Hotaru in particular, she disintegrates to 8, gets angry, and tries to fight her. Episode 26 (the final episode) has Mikan finally reflecting on her relationship with Hotaru and beginning to integrate to 4. In this episode, Hotaru is supposedly going to study abroad without having told Mikan. Mikan is distraught and tries to write a letter to express her feelings: "Dear Hotaru Imai, I'm writing this letter to you because there's something I have to tell you. Hotaru, you're my best-best friend. If you went away I...I...-" Then Mikan screams "No!" and immediately starts packing her bags so she can start following Hotaru again: "I can't imagine my life without Hotaru! If Hotaru's going overseas, I'm going with her! Even if it's the North pole, then so be it! Even if I can't understand the language, I'll be fine as long as I'm with Hotaru! Hotaru and I are best friends.. we'll be together forever! Always! Always...!" And then in the same scene Mikan finally starts to reflect: "But just how long is 'always' anyway? I followed Hotaru here [to Alice Academy] because I wanted to be with her...but we can't stay here forever. Am I going to follow her every time she transfers? Am I going to follow her to work when we grow up? Am I going to follow her wherever she goes, forever? Is that what best friends do...? What does it mean to be friends?" Mikan finishes her letter and tries to deliver it to Hotaru, but sees that Hotaru's dorm room is empty and all that's left is one of Hotaru's inventions holding a study guide that will help Mikan with her make-up exam. Mikan cries and says "Hotaru, I told you before...your...your love is too hard to understand." After the whole gang tells Mikan they will help her stall Hotaru and she gets permission to temporarily leave her make-up exam, Mikan goes to find Hotaru before she leaves. When Mikan reuintes with Hotaru she attempts to do a flying kick at her while exclaiming: "Big dummy, idiot, moron, fool!" which Hotaru easily counters. When the gag is over, Mikan says, "I have something to tell you, all right? I was going to say it in a letter, but forget that idea! Knowing you, you might not even read it! So I'll tell you myself! I've decided! I won't follow you anymore! I'm really sad you're leaving. I have terrible grades and I'm always causing trouble. I'm really, really worried about what's going to happen after you're gone! But you know what? If I continue to stay by your side, I'll just depend on you again! I feel like I might end up not being able to do anything without you. I really love you, Hotaru! You're my best friend *and my pride*! But, I hate how I depend on you! I hate how I rely on you...That's why I won't follow you anymore! I'm going to do my best, so I won't have to depend on you anymore! That's why... That's why, I want you to... *I want you to become someone I can be even more proud of!* And please don't forget... no matter how far apart we are...that we're... that we're... that we're best friends!" Hotaru then clears up the misunderstanding that she's only going to present her research and not move overseas for studying. This absolutely comes off to me as sx 2 > so 7.
