I’m surprised by how long the ISTP consensus has lasted. There are several good comments here explaining why Luke is an ISTJ, and thankfully, people seem to be coming to their senses, but as of the time I’m writing this, it still says ISTP. While he fits the stereotypical image of an ISTP, I have yet to see a good explanation of how he uses Ti, Se, Ni, and Fe, so I wanted to put in my two cents for the ISTJ Luke agenda. First of all, let’s talk about what Si actually is: subjective perception of sensory details and processing sensations based on how they personally relate to the user. Se, on the other hand, is objective; it sees the physical world for what it is, and then other functions might add personalized meaning to sensory details, but it doesn’t inherently value the subjective relationship one has with an object. This isn’t to say that Se users are unsentimental, but an aux Se user is not going to be as attached to familiar sensory details as Luke is. He’s the poster child (grown man?) for dominant Si. I come bearing examples: He’s lived in the same town his entire life. He keeps his dad’s store almost exactly the same for 25+ years, down to the paint colours (1x14) and the misleading sign. He wears the same outfit every day, down to his socks (4x17), as well as being one of the only characters who repeats clothing items (lukesflannel.com), which was obviously a deliberate costuming choice meant to illustrate that Luke is a creature of habit. His relationship with Lorelai is chock-full of Si symbolism, such as the blue hat (1x10), the black hat he wears when they break up (S7), the horoscope, etc. He often indulges her inferior Si moments even when he thinks she’s being ridiculous; he goes as far as buying her a Jeep just for its engine because of her sentimental attachment to her car (7x19). Luke SAYS things like “tradition is a trap” (1x08), but his entire life is based on consistency and familiarity even when it’s illogical. Luke struggles with unpredictability more than anything else, and that’s much more in line with inferior Ne than auxiliary Se. When all else fails, he goes into low Ne panic mode, just spitting out one negative possibility after another. There are a ton of moments like this in the show, but the main ones I can remember off the top of my head are how he reacts to Lorelai’s potential engagement in 2x01, his speech to Jess at the end of 2x05, and his post-dinner freakout in 6x14. He’s action-oriented and somewhat impulsive, but I don’t think that’s actually Se. Luke isn’t driven to action because he values being aware of the present moment and acting quickly, and he doesn’t need to figure out a precise logical solution before he puts his ideas into action, he just does whatever works, which is Te > Ti-Se. As he puts it in 2x05: “Now, I don’t know if this is the right way to handle this, but this is the way it’s being handled.” In 2x15, he wants to keep Taylor from buying the building next to the diner, so he buys it himself. Problem technically solved. Also, Te needs external feedback on its logic. For Luke, the Rants™ are clearly a method of getting that feedback. Fi and Fe are similar, but with feeling information. He seems to know how he feels about things without consulting anyone, but he always sorts through his logical reasoning out loud and usually with another person as a sounding board. This compilation shows his Te-Fi pretty well: https://youtu.be/oG8x5jlfrpg. And in general, Luke seems to favor Je > Ji. This is easiest to spot in how he interacts with his loved ones. He has an existential crisis after Jess (correctly) points out that he tries to fix others’ problems for them whether they like it or not. High Ji will respect subjectivity, but Luke often struggles with overly subjective reasoning. Ti dom doesn’t seem very likely to me. That being said, his issues are primarily caused by imbalanced Si-Ne, so his judging functions being in the middle would make more sense. It’s important to remember that IxTPs still have Fe in their stack even if they struggle to use it appropriately, but Fi users are more… Fe-n’t. It’s not something that’s on their radar. I don’t see any Fe in Luke, even low Fe, but I do see Fi in how he interacts with the town. This quote from 2x08 sums up his approach: “I haven’t pitched in on the decorative pageantry town stuff because it all seems insane to me, but I don’t get in the way of that stuff either.” Most of his fights with Taylor are started not by some logical inconsistency in Taylor’s reasoning, but by Luke’s disdain for everything Taylor does and stands for on a personal level, which is Fi > Ti. Luke’s defining trait throughout the show isn’t that he’s logical, the only sane man, but that he’s reliable and consistent. His biggest weakness isn’t poor Fe, but poor Ne. Yes, he’s grumpy and can fix things, but when you look past that and into cognitive functions, I think it’s clear that he’s ISTJ rather than ISTP. That’s all, folks.
