You say the movie doesn't give us enough material to get to know Nikki, but while that's somewhat true, it's not as exaggerated as it might seem: 1) Nikki is a wild person, so much so that she was previously bullied as "Freaky Nikki." Another indication of this is when, leaving the bar, Ian complains about who will climb on the table and dance when she says she wants to go home. Nikki constantly cracks jokes in and out of the bar, and Bear laughs the most at them. 2) Nikki is someone who helps people. Aside from her giving money to a homeless man in the scene where they leave the bar, Bear says that when everyone in the neighborhood treated him badly, Nikki treated him well, and that she was the only one who called him when his grandmother died. She also mentions how Nikki helped him during an unfortunate incident in class back then, when he forgot his mouthpiece. (All of this directly leads to Bear falling in love with her. Because Bear never says a single thing about Nikki's appearance, not even during the rehearsal of the confession in the first scene; he only talks about how supportive she is of him.) 3) Nikki is aware that Bear likes her. But Nikki sees him like a brother. Nikki has told Sarah before, and hinted at it in the story at the party, that she sees Bear as her little brother. However, she does not judge him, she still creates opportunities for him to confess; she intentionally goes for drinks together, jumps from topic to topic on the way home, talks about how much of a brick wall he is, and even when she finally gets angry, she asks him about it. She also takes Sarah's hint in the car, in a very good-natured way, trying not to hurt Bear's feelings. Moreover, she was doing all this while being fed up, tired, and weary of the situation. +4) She wants to be a writer. Nikki is quitting her job because she can't realize her goals this way. Also, Bear wanted to be in a band back then, and her teacher made him change it but Nikki was supporting him.
