𝔻𝕚𝕡𝕡𝕖𝕣 𝕚𝕤 𝕊𝕠𝕔𝕚𝕒𝕝 𝟞, 𝕟𝕠𝕥 𝕊𝕖𝕝𝕗-ℙ𝕣𝕖𝕤𝕖𝕣𝕧𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟 𝟞: [1/2] While the current consensus is Self-Preservation 6, and that isn’t a horrible option for his subtype, I think it could be a lot better, so I’m here to present why I think Dipper isn’t an SP6, but instead a Social 6. First off, let’s define what the differences are between the two. While there is the obvious difference in their instinctual variants, the way that the two subtypes deal with their fear and cowardice is a bit different. Self-Preservation 6 is the most phobic 6, and deals with this fear by acting warm and putting on a front in an attempt to form an agreement of protection, sort of in a “You don’t hurt me, I don’t hurt you, we look out for each other” kind of setup; it deals with fear by seeking protection from others. Meanwhile, Social 6 is a halfway point between phobic and counterphobic, and deals with fear by seeking an authoritative frame of reference to adhere to, be it in an actual person, or instead an ideology, set of rules or guidelines, or some other sort of abstract reason. It is also the coldest and most intellectual 6. Chestnut on Self-Preservation 6: →”In the Self-Preservation Six personality, fear manifests as insecurity. Self-Preservation Sixes have a fear related to survival—a fear of not being protected that fuels a driving need for protection through friendship and other kinds of alliances with others. This is the most phobic of the three Six subtypes; this is the Six subtype who feels fear the most.” →”Perceiving the world as dangerous, Self-Preservation Sixes seek friendly connections and alliances, and to do this they endeavor to be friendly, trustworthy, and supportive—as good allies are supposed to be. As Naranjo clarifies, “not trusting themselves enough, they feel alone and incapable without outside support.” Self-Preservation Sixes want to feel the embrace of the family, to be in a warm, protected place where there are no enemies. They search for an “idealized other” for protection, and they can have issues that look like separation anxiety. Like a child who needs to hold on to the mother, these Sixes don’t feel confident in defending their own self-interests and survival.” Chestnut on Social 6: –>”Lacking either trust in themselves (like the Sexual Six) or other people (like the Self Preservation Six), Social Sixes deal with the passion of fear and its related anxiety by relying on abstract reason or a specific ideology as an impersonal frame of reference. They find safety by relying on authorities, or on the “authority” of reason, rules, and rational thinking.” –>"The Social Six typically represents a mixture of phobic and counterphobic expressions. This Six is a cooler character than the Self-Preservation Six. They find safety in being precise about how one should conduct oneself. They have a lot of anticipatory anxiety— they believe that everything will go wrong. So they rely on precision in following the rules as a way of coping with their anxiety. They feel most secure when they have clear minds and when things are in clear categories. Social Sixes are good Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, dedicated to adhering to the group code and to a competent way of doing things based on that code." Now in regards to Dipper, I don’t really recall the main way of him dealing with his cowardice being to form alliances with other people and act warm towards them in order to try and get their protection. The only time he ever really did that was in the Fight Fighters episode where Robbie tried to fight him and he got Rumble to protect him, but IMO that was sort of an accident. He didn’t know what the inscription on the machine did that summoned Rumble, and it was the only real option he had at the time in order to get out of fighting Robbie. Thus, I don’t think using this scene (the only one I can think of that he actually did something SP6ish) to determine Dipper’s subtype is entirely fair. Also, he’s a bit too untrusting of others and the people he’s closest with IMO to be SP6, just look at his interaction with Ford in the Last Mabelcorn and Stan whenever the portal was about to go off if you don’t believe me.
