Biographie
Axel Honneth, born 18 July 1949 in Essen, is a German philosopher and sociologist. Since 2001 he has been Director of the Institute for Social Research - known to have hosted the Frankfurt School - in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Since 2011, he has been a professor at Columbia University in New York. Originally from Essen, he studied philosophy, sociology and Germanistics in Bonn and Bochum. He continued his academic career at the Free University of Berlin and the Max Planck Institute in Munich (as a scholarship holder under the direction of Jürgen Habermas), before joining the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, where he currently teaches social philosophy.
