(1/4) When I first encountered this game, I was a little unclear on Yonaka's Jungian type (other than her attitude being Introverted), since I couldn't name that many attributes about her which belonged to any particular Jungian archetype. Given that Jung describes his eight functional types in pronounced terms, it may be somewhat difficult to type a character who seems as well-adjusted (on the surface…) as Yonaka. However, there are some clues as to her functional axes if you observe how she behaves... To decide whether Yonaka is a Jungian Thinker or Feeler, I took a second look at her lines and tried to determine whether she typically thinks in moralistic or logical terms, as well as where her deficiency in judgment is typically found (i.e., her inferior function)... and I believe that Yonaka is a Jungian feeler. Yonaka's actions outside of the immediately practical are mostly motivated by feeling-values--for instance, she checks on the crying General Hashasky against Defect Mogeko's advice because "[she feels] so bad for them"... In general, when she isn’t confused (“Ehhhh?” is a very common exclamation by her throughout the game), she’s simply attempting to reassure herself that she’ll be alright (not a Thinking judgment—just emotional self-support) or remarking on how unrealistic or strange the events of the game have been (which l’ll talk about later). I will note that it is true that Yonaka tends to ask a lot of questions—for example, she questions why Somewhat Strange Mogeko is being so kind to her when he gives her useful advice. Her attempts to square the castle with what she understands about reality may also seem to be the products of a Jungian Thinking process (Ti?). However, this does not account for her key decisions throughout the game (especially when she chooses sentiment over practicality, like when she stayed behind with Defect Mogeko after he got shot), and it doesn’t explain why her snapping point looks the way it does (an attempt to gain control over the castle’s residents). Jung describes both extroverted thinking and introverted thinking in Psychological Types, and neither quite fit Yonaka’s judgment of the world. For example, this is his Te-dom: “This type of man gives the deciding voice-not merely for himself alone but also on behalf of his entourage-either to the actual objective reality or to its objectively orientated, intellectual formula. By this formula are good and evil measured, and beauty and ugliness determined. All is right that corresponds with this formula; all is wrong that contradicts it; and everything that is neutral to it is purely accidental.” Except when she’s pushed to her breaking point at the very end (which I will talk about later), Yonaka does not impose such judgments on others. To go back to Yonaka’s evaluation of the castle’s strangeness, Yonaka rationalizes it by saying things like, “This has all been a series of extremely unrealistic events so far… The way back would be abnormal too.” If you look at it, this isn’t quite an attempt at “organization” the way Jungian thinking is defined. It’s more along the lines of pattern-sensing, which is in the realm of Jungian Ni: “[…] introverted intuition, through its perception of inner processes, gives certain data which may possess supreme importance for the comprehension of general occurrences: it can even foresee new possibilities in more or less clear outline, as well as the event which later actually transpires. Its prophetic prevision is to be explained from its relation to the archetypes which represent the law-determined course of all experienceable things.” Ni is basically a “history will repeat itself” type of function; it creates ideas without evaluating whether they’re logical (T) or ethical (F). Yonaka is recognizing a pattern here without attempting to reconcile it with morality or sense-making theories; she just accepts her Ni vision for what it is and moves on through the castle.
