Mr. Scratch is the manifestation of Alan's irrational thoughts and the myth surrounding Alan Wake created by the public perception of him as a rockstar writer that mysteriously vanished. This is why he wears a suit and has slicked back hair, and if you watch the talk show Alan is on prior to the events of the game, he shares the same mannerisms of sarcastic humour and putting on an affable, laid back persona. I have a feeling he'll be Saga/Casey's antagonist in the real world and probably the one behind the ritualistic murders, he definitely didn't die in American Nightmare and seems to be haunting Alice from what we see in Control. Edit: This is probably very confusing to read if you never played American Nightmare since Scratch has no real personality in 2, he's just the Dark Presence manifesting in the real world through Alan, the Herald of Darkness to his Champion of Light. I'm a little dissapointed by this considering how much they build him up in the game as the devil, the one manipulating the cults Casey investigates and generally being this unseen, malevolent presence that haunts Alan wherever he goes. I was expecting a more threatening version of his AN persona. I got really excited when he finally appeared but then his boss fight turned out to be exactly what I was afraid of it being.
