Rick set the objective and "forced" her to marry Jerry. Beth doesn't care about him but pretends that she does because she wants to be seen as successful and good. Therefore Beth is used to give births to mentally challenged people which Rick can use as his personal scramblers but because of Lima Syndrome he actually became irrationaly attached to them. Rick gaslights Beth with appeal to morality to keep with Jerry.
