𝐀𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐄 - 𝐒𝐎𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐒𝐈𝐗 𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐔𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 (1/2) > “The adaptation instinct when coming into contact with the fearful passion of the 6 produces a character whose fear transforms into the need to obey laws for acceptance. They attempt to resolve their social insecurity and avoid their fear by adapting to a belief, a group, a leader, or a personal moral code … They are also very afraid of bending what they believe in, they aren't flexible with their beliefs.” I think Amane’s second voice drama and music video help us get an even better understanding of her character and motivations. Amane has always shown extreme religious faith, since the beginning of the project, due to the cult-like indoctrination she was exposed to. She is bound to these societal norms of duty and rules. She shows resentment towards characters like Shidou for actively protecting people as it goes against “her” rules. In fact, the very first thing she does in her first voice drama is tell Es that they need to apologize for being late. > “When you do something wrong, you need to apologize. Those are both my personal rules and the rules of society.” This action just goes to show how much importance Amane places on duty, rules, faith, and how little of an identity she has outside of the faith she was brainwashed into believing as a child. She views things through the lens of “the rules of society,” despite her views being very detached from the real world (however she is aware of this). > “The idealistic orientation of this character (the social six) gives his reality a quasi-religious theoretical quality. Deficit mothering, together with an effectively absent father (due to excessive normativity or due to emotional and physical absence), as well as the omnipresence of ideals and expectations charged with mandate, weave an absence of self, an internal emptiness that is connected with a primordial, radical insecurity.” At the beginning of her second music video, Amane and her copies are dressed in all white and are placed against a white backdrop, and the screen zooms out above the marching band to resemble the (vague) image of a cloud, which I think is a metaphor for Amane’s lack of self-identity outside of her cult. Although we still don’t have the full picture of her character, it isn’t too far-fetched to believe that Amane has some sort of internal insecurity deep within (that even she herself doesn’t acknowledge), which she hides behind her faith in order to be sure, never doubtful. Also, whenever she gets stressed or defensive, notice how Amane starts to refer to herself using the impersonal “we” or “us.” See examples of this below: > “You’ve insulted us… You’ve insulted God!” “If you end up deciding not to forgive me—to forgive us— then I will not forgive you, either.” Someone actually talked about this in a YouTube comment analyzing Amane’s second voice drama, and I think it describes both her character and that of the SO6 perfectly. “When her (Amane’s) coping mechanism as 'we' was shaken, you could see glimpses of how she actually feels. Lashing out against being rejected and judged, she tries to become a concept, something irreproachable and undefiable, so that it is not her, the child, who is being rejected, but her religion, which can fight back.” The following is stated about the social six: “The distressing insecurity of this character and its connection with the radical fragility of one's position in the universe generate sudden movements from powerlessness to omnipotence. The shift of power towards strong leaders, lofty ideals, totems, and concepts is generating a co-participation covered in the search for omnipotence and rebellion against vulnerability.” Similarly to Amane, the social six relies on external authority figures and searches for omnipotence to mask their vulnerability. This is why, upon being judged by Es, Amane takes on the image of this all-powerful religious concept in order to not only justify her murder but to show her purity and express judgment. > “(Amane:) If you do not adjust your way of thinking… We, too, will never be able to forgive you.” > “(Es:) What do you mean, 'we'? You’re making me laugh. What you’re doing is just plain murder—regardless of if we’re talking generally or according to religion. It’s murder.” > “(Amane:) …!” > “(Es:) Understand that. Amane Momose. It’s not the ‘you’s’ who killed someone—it’s just you. Don’t look away from your own actions by playing pretend!” The E6 is also described as having a similar abstract, theoretical orientation as the social subtype of the type: “He not only needs guidance, but also typically solves this conflict through appeal to the guidance of some logical system or of reason itself. Ennea-type VI is not only an intellectual type, but the most logical of types, one who is devoted to reason.”
