Fi is literally the function of empathy, I dont't think there should be a debate for it. Fe is the function of sympathy, I'll make a clear example below. Person: Hello! Do you want to watch a comedy movie with me tonight? Fe user: Sure! You don't like comedy movies, but you're willing to watch it with me because you know I like it! I really appreciate it, thank you. :) • Extraverted functions prioritize the content of the external itself (Fe, Ne, Se, Te). Fe is about interpersonal connections (extraverted feeling). Thus, a Fe user would sympathize with people. Fe wants to have a good relationship with people and it's good to recognize their body languages (that says it all, body languages = external content). Fe may not empathize with a person, but they show sympathy for them. They seek social harmony. Person #2: Hello! Do you want to watch a comedy movie with me tonight? Fi user: A comedy movie? Are you sure? I thought you didn't like this kind of movie... oh no, you're doing this because of me, aren't you? :( • Introverted functions prioritize the impression of the external content (Fi, Ni, Si, Ti). Fi is about intrapersonal values (introverted feeling). Thus, a Fi user would empathize with people. Fi is about perceiving inner feelings or sensations and it's not limited to itself (that says it all, inner feelings = internal content). Fi may not sympathize with a person, but they show empathy for them. They make subjective reflections. Of course Fe users can be empathetic and Fi users can be sympathetic, this happens almost all the time, but this is not about their true cognitive functions. Sympathy and empathy usually coexist, but this doesn't apply to all cases.
