ZANKA SP3 ARGUMENT I find it difficult to see Zanka as anything other than SP3; his fixation is to become the best despite being ordinary and thus reaffirm his value as a person. His desire to be unique, outstanding, special ("[...] To prove to myself that i am different from other fakes.") points directly to the heart triad, and, in my opinion, to enneatype 3. His perception of himself is highly unstable despite his arrogant attitude, as we are shown in flashbacks to his past. Zanka's initial conviction of being superior to the rest was easily destroyed by Hyo, simply because she far surpassed him in training and then chose a common weapon while he went for an impressive, but useless staff. Zanka, in his eagerness to be perceived as outstanding, got himself a worthless but tremendously eye-catching weapon. He overdid his need to draw attention to himself, and it backfired. (“... the over-efficient character is always concerned with acting over-efficiently on the outside. He overdoes everything, and this excess ruins what he is trying to do. He cannot adjust to reality because his efficiency is excessive. When he turns inward, he turns his over-efficiency against himself and ruins himself”) After this, he realized that he had been fooling himself into believing he was a genius instead of an ordinary boy, immediately isolated himself from the rest of the world and thought of committing suicide; the moment he realized he was wearing a mask that even distorted his perception of himself he had an identity crisis. “The pathetic one was me all along. [...] I'm just trash that wants to be called a genius. By the time I realized it, average people can never become geniuses. I think I might kill myself... Me and this staff are just a bunch of fakes...” Based on this, it can be stated that, for Zanka, his value as a person is not stable at all: he despises himself infinitely for being “normal, average, fake”. However, instead of drowning and wallowing in his suffering, he creates a goal to improve himself: to prove that someone as generic as he is can surpass a genius. This competitiveness so closely tied to an external concept of what it means to “be special” is precisely why I don't think enneatype 4 fits him at all either. Such efficiency and need to be useful and openly recognized is undoubtedly the signature of E3. However, despite his arrogance, always present in some form, Zanka is nowhere near as explicitly attention-seeking as the average E3, and this is why I believe he is SP3: his façade is to pretend to be completely indifferent to recognition and validation. This can be observed several times in the manga. When Enjin, who is more experienced and by his standards superior to him, praises him, he gets excited for a few seconds and immediately tries to hide his happiness, making it seem like his congratulations have no effect on him: “Enjin: Your interpretation was spot on, Zanka. Not bad. As expected from a trainer. (Zanka smiles for a second, then switches to a serious face) Zanka: ...Geniuses can't see themselves more objectively than us normies! Don't look down on the mind of an average person!” (“When Vanity gets distorted by the self-preservation instinct, E3 becomes worried with his safety and conservation, manifesting vanity into believing he's productive, responsible, and "good" [...] Every E3 sells an image, but this subtype sells the idea of someone who apparently doesn't care about their image; they avoid being self-assuming and often portray themselves as reliable, helpful and hard-working individuals.”) One can also observe how he appreciates dissimulation, for he takes quiet pride in his abilities as a student; he does not openly boast at all, yet he is undeniably presumptuous (“[...] I've been bustin’ my ass off behind the scenes. Y'all just wait and see: I'll become the best with a straight face”). Either way, Zanka's self depreciation and deep conviction that he's average immediately rules out a type as convinced of its worth and righteousness as E1. No E1 has such an unstable perception of themselves that is so easily shattered. His search for stability based on acceptance and praise of his abilities by his superiors and his constant attempts to present himself as a responsible, stable and capable person make him a textbook SP3 if you ask me.
