Henry Winter is as clear cut an INTJ as they get. His dominant Ni is clear in the way he discusses the plan to poison Bunny and eventually push him off the cliff. The entire plan is based around relying on luck. Ne users, in contrast, diverge in their thought process and see multiple possibilities as to what can happen, they will then use their judging axis to decide what to do. Henry, however, has a very holistic, synthesised vision of what will happen and is comfortable trusting his intuition. When something happens that he did not foresee as having a possibility of happening, such as Julian finding the letter at the end of the book, he completely breaks down. Richard tells us in this moment about how shocked he is at Henry acting out of character, stumbling on his words etc. due to being presented with a situation that his dominant Ni had not prepared him for. His auxiliary Te is also visible in how he schemes, especially in contrast to Richard’s dominant Ti. Henry’s plan to poison Bunny with the mushrooms is full of, albeit twisted, Te logic. Henrys logical judgements are based on external data; such as the books telling him what to do, the experiments he does with the dogs, getting Richard to do the math, etc. This beautifully contrasts with Richard’s Ti which resorts to picking apart the logical details in the plan instead of caring about the external data, Richard instead makes fun out of Henry for using old books for this plan (“I don’t want to risk my life on some home remedy from the middle ages”) as his mind automatically goes to logically making sense of the plan, which Henry’s Te mind does not do as he believes he has the external data to prove that his plan will work. Henry’s inferior Se is also very evident in his detachment from and ignorance of concrete reality. Henry struggles to see the realistic, concrete side of everything that he does throughout the book as his dreamy Ni way of thinking represses this. Charles (a Fe-Se user) even tells us later in the book that Henry “looks like something from another planet” after leaving all of the police work to Charles, who expresses rage at Henry for his head being too in the clouds being the downfall of the group, and also of his life. I agree that Henry is an E5, but I am not so sure if I agree with the consensus of him fitting the sexual subtype? I think that avarice acted out through need to attach to other people in the sexual five more accurately describes Richards motivations rather than Henrys. I would suggest that Henry fits the social subtype of E5 much better, as social 5s act out their avarice through attaching it to a set of ideas, and purposely disconnect from the real world in favor of their fantasy. I think that the scene where Henry tells Richards about the bacchanal sounded a lot like words coming from the mouth of a social 5.
