While reading this book I was bewildered by the fact that I could relate so much with a character so unhinged As to functions: Ni - obsessed with purpose and meaning. Assigns meanings to everything, even in places where there is none (for example, when something bad happens to him, he thinks "is this God's way of punishing me?"). Speaks in big picture terms, and relates every situation in his life to a bigger theme rather than looking at them individually. This is also used to justify some horrific acts throughout the book. Fe - unhealthy obsession with being liked. We can see it with Kathy, which he latches on to and holds as some sort of messiah figure. Has a savior complex with Alicia, which he insists he's 'saving', but just ends up hurting more. His motives are clearly self-serving and narcissistic, and are only meant to put him on a pedestal. The unhealthy development of this function partly stems from having abandonment issues from his past. Ti - has a very subjective sense of logic. None of the advice he gets from others sticks to him, and he much rathers following his inner compass of what's logical. Often has far-reaching conclusions while working with Ni. Pretty developed throughout the book, and is used mainly to provide commenary on the information he gathers. Se - has an unhealthy relationship with stimuli and substance abuse. Shown to be a heavy drinker and smoker. Has probably 4 or 5 different addictions, all happening at the same time. Under stress can get filled with rage, which causes him to fantasize about commiting heinous acts, on one of which he ends up following.
