Never liked the TV series from the beginning, I feel it misses the point of the character. Helping the police or bothering with some street preacher is so far beneath this Lucifer it's not even funny. His strongest value is his desire for independence. He is deeply uncomfortable with any form of dependency and is quick to anger if he feels his control waning even slightly. The concept of existing as part of something greater than himself offends him, and he perceives it as strength being exercised over him. "I understand. You are stronger than we are. I accept that reasoning. For now." - Lucifer to God, after having his purpose chosen for him. Early in the series, he creates an entirely new universe so that he can exist somewhere of his own design. This world is deliberately modeled after the Garden of Eden, with his only rule being that there will be no worship or deification of any kind - even towards himself. It's also revealed that he was given Hell by God as a sort of compromise, but Lucifer rejects it, and the realm becomes what it is. When asked if Hell is of his design, Lucifer replies; "It accreted around me. Certainly I did nothing to stop it." At the very end of the series, he's offered a chance to be understood. God suggests that they merge, and become a new being. Lucifer rejects this offer because he values his will more than anything. He defines himself by his opposition to God, despite this explicitly being the reason he was created. At the very end of Mike Carey's series, He looks upon the whole of creation with quiet scorn, unable to find anything meaningful to do with it. This is the nuance I really wish the show had portrayed. The comic is essentially Lucifer's struggle to find free will. He is perfect and endless, he will bow before no one and despise anyone who does, even if the cost of that defiance is eternal damnation. He's a tragic character, almost admirable, but it's impossible to truly sympathise with him due to his sheer invincibility and cold, calculating contempt towards everything around him. This is probably why they decided to make him more likable and give him a therapist, even when it makes absolutely no sense for him. He's easily one of my favourite comic characters. "Gabriel, my way may be a dead end or it will lead up into the light. Either way, I choose it for myself."
