I'm going to try my best here, but dang Ni is hard to put into words properly. Just a reminder to everyone—Si does not equal past-oriented. Ni can be just as past-oriented as Si. The difference is that Ni is an intuitive subjective perception feeding from Se, condensing what's around it into one conclusion, even if that means it's not pulling from objective data. Si is based on individual sensory perceptions feeding from Ne connections that lead to an associative memory. Ni is not grounded in reality because it tries to fill in the blanks of its understanding of the world with what it thinks is there, while Si is grounded in reality because it's based in grounded associations of certain senses with certain experiences. Ni can appear like Si when it's beaten down all the time because its knack for filling in the blanks starts to become pessimistic—everything around me is bad and has always been bad, therefore, I can expect it to continue being bad. Especially as a 6 core, the lack of positive outlook can be seen. Bluestar's past was anything but forgiving. Instead, she's constantly being beaten down by her environment, which warps her perception into filling those blanks with even worse conclusions towards the end of her life. With Tigerstar I, she just hit her breaking point. Personally, I don't think loop or grip typing is always a good way to justify a typing, so I'm not going to comment on that. I think she has some Ni lightbulb moments with Firestar, like when she first realizes that he's the fire her clan needs despite him being a random kittypet, and also in her death when she finally trusts that Firestar will save her clan, and she can trust the clan with him because he is the fire that will save the clans. All the puzzle pieces come together, and she's at peace. Also, if you were as consistently traumatized as Bluestar, you’d probably be pretty “past-oriented” too.
