Hoo boy this is gonna have to be... one hell of an argument. After watching his arc in Season 3 of the anime (so obligatory spoilers), I have a lot of thoughts about his enneatype. I understand how on the surface he would come across as an ennea 9. Because of his upbringing, he's used to withdrawing and not rocking the boat in social situations. He functions as a good mediator for the rest of the unit at times as well. And I do think he could have 9 in his tritype. However, beyond that, I don't believe that he exhibits the other traits of a core 9: his core fear/desire, directions of (dis)integration, etc., don't seem to fit at all. Rather, I think he's an enneagram 4. Why? Because one of his strongest desires is to create an identity for himself that can be loved. Yuki notes that Yamato tries to create this identity by establishing himself as a product of his work (which is also why I believe in the 3-wing), but that it's not working. Like typical Fours, he places strong emphasis on his own emotions regarding himself, and the differences between him and other people. He hates himself like... a lot... partly because he kept focusing on the differences in motivations between him and the rest of i7. He feels bad for being different, for being less "pure", and thus withdraws: "The idea of telling them who I really am terrifies me." It's important to note here he's acting as an unhealthy 4 who pushes people away, not a healthy one who would have fewer qualms about opening up. From the ennea website, an unhealthy 4 is "tormented by delusional self-contempt, self-reproaches, self-hatred, and morbid thoughts: everything is a source of torment. Blaming others, they drive away anyone who tries to help them." Next, the thing that truly sold me on him being a 4. "I want to be loved, but I don't put in the effort to be loved." A huuuge thing with Fours is wanting to be "rescued" and loved/understood for who they truly are. He wants people to love him, but he doesn't take any action towards trying to make that happen (unlike an ennea 2, for example). "Fours tend to withdraw from others, while hoping that others will seek them out... Fours look for someone to rescue them." He pushes people like Yuki, Nagi, and Mitsuki away, but he still yearns for that love and connection, somewhere where he can be accepted for being himself. At the end, he says, "I want to stay in this place where I can like who I am." I really think that his actions are the result of an unhealthy enneagram 4, who eventually, with the help of his friends, learns to finally take the first step to embracing his own self and identity.
