Whether Paris is a Three or an Eight is a topic of intense discussion in this area. Although I can appreciate the Three viewpoints, I think Paris is fundamentally an Eight. Threes are related to image as well as success. If it doesn't involve defeating someone at something, Paris doesn't care what people think of her. Despite her best efforts, she is unable to alter who she is in order to appear more favorable to them. On the other hand, threes are chameleons; they can change into anything to blend in or achieve their goals. Paris was unable to make it through her first party at Yale or her first interview at Harvard while attempting to be charming. She managed to act friendly and social for about fifteen minutes before returning to her true self at Yale. She aspires to excellence, but I doubt it stems from a desire for admiration in the same way that Threes do. She desires authority. Eight has a fierce rivalry. They are competitive because they are afraid of being outmatched or dominated, which fuels this competitiveness. When pressured or stressed, Eights move in the direction of the Five. The characteristics at this point could appear to be: withdrawal, gathering information, and developing strategy. When Rory arrived at Chilton, Paris started by researching her and formulating a plan to prevent her from surpassing her. Every time she perceives that someone might beat her, she acts similarly. For instance, in 3x16, she investigates every one of her rivals and uses what she discovers to frighten them, including poor Brad. Meanwhile, Threes take on the negative traits of Nine in stress. This would be becoming selfless, people pleasing, achieving what society or others want them to, forgoing their sense of self. Type Threes focus on success and achievement because their own internal compass for how they are doing is not very strong. Without a clear internal guide, they look to the outside world to give them validation. It is hard for them to separate image from reality, and this is part of why they can be so image-conscious. Type Eights tend to see the world like a battlefield, and some Eights even use wartime metaphors when describing their internal experience. Their drive to achieve and accumulate wealth is driven by a desire to be strong and powerful and to avoid feeling weak and vulnerable. They can be image-conscious but not to support their internal sense of worth. Instead they use image, material possessions, important titles, and so forth to establish a sense of power and to avoid vulnerability. They want success as a means to gaining power. Eights tend to be comfortable with conflict and may even use it as a communication strategy to get to the bottom of an issue. Expressing anger typically comes easily and naturally to Eights. Threes are focused on how things look, so in most circumstances, they avoid conflict and take a more indirect approach (backchannel conversations and so forth). If their goals are threatened, they may engage aggressively but the aggression is usually brief. They may posture as angry but then crumble in the face of a true fight. Eights are leaders, deal makers, and power brokers who want to make the world conform to their personal vision. They want to have a large impact, to build and accomplish great things, possibly something that will live as a testament to the greatness of their audacity and will. Strong and implacable, they can be ruthless when something or someone gets in their way. They have large egos, and achieving some form of glory is important to them. Achieving personal power is the dominating drive in Eights, and there is nothing ambiguous, much less furtive or duplicitous, about them. By contrast, power is not the key motive of Threes; achieving success and prestige and basking in the admiring attention of others is. (By contrast, Eights do not care about popularity; they do not care about the goodwill of others, so long as they get their way.)
