I see that 7 is winning on these votes but i strongly disagree. The way he doesn't go for diplomatic paths in any case and how he is protective of people around him makes me think he's clearly an 8, but a fully disintegrated 8. He fully detached himself of everything because of how weak he feels not finding his own path and being as focused in the job like Carmy (the way he doesn't answer to Carmy when he shows him how good he's getting at making food is typical of an 8 ashamed of himself). He starts projects but never really commits fully which leads him to have a bad self image in everything despite having his own strong ego and his tendency to confront anything that feels wrong. The first thing we get to see is that he has to play the "father" role since their father died and had to be the adult pretty early. This leads to his relation with Donna being more or less abandoned, only relying on her when needed while still loving her deepdown and protecting as it's manifested with him wanting no one to disturb her. What triggers him the most is being reminded that he is a failure and he doesn't deviate from it like a 7 would do, he feels insulted and uses his ego to break down the enemy as he does with Lee. Also the relation he has with Carmy is very 8-1 coded. A 1 that sees a lost 8 friend would most likely lend a hand by presenting projects because he feels the energy the 8 has and knows its potential (mostly a potential that he lacks as 1s tend to search for optimization). He would try to understand go forward by presenting better things to do but as we see Michael is fully desintegrated into 5, fully detached and thinking he can't hold that promise. The way he builds a whole plan for Carmy to end the job also is quite an 8 thing to do. 8s have a tendency to help in "secret", they don't like to have someone thank them (same way he acts with Tina about her resume and job) and the way he builds a whole plan for that feels like how 8s love to do surprises, traps and so on. (8s love "satisfaction", especially SPs) Richie on the other hand represents what COULD be Michael if he tried to accept himself and change, he's an 8 too. He's the same as Michael with maybe less charm but the same kind of behavior about marketing, projects, relations, loyalty and so on. Richie is all about what would happen if you give yourself a second chance which Michael couldn't. He's a beautifully well written 8 who's desintegrated into 5.
