re: ISTJ vs ESTJ im not bothered by ESTJ votes cause i feel like he just doesn’t employ either Ne or Fi really at all lol. he is so stuck in his upper 2 functions in such high pressure environments that it just doesnt cross his mind to use either one, he gets virtually no opportunity for natural usage of either. what i find with carmy, however, is that his journey in becoming comfortable with Fi is written more at the forefront of his character, and due to the plot and the unravelling of the traumatic events in his life we naturally see him under a light that is shined onto his personal emotions, thought processes, and his values in the past. i think the scenes of him at the AA meetings have these really eloquently worded monologues that have carmy kind of deconstruct what it is he’s really feeling, and it’s clunky and its acted out as if it’s unnatural to him, but it is the first step of growth we see, which tips me more to a tertiary placement than inferior. i think an inferior Fi would be a lot less aware of itself, its own motivations, where they stem from, etc. carmy already knows to a big enough degree that he is depressed and traumatized, and he already knows what is blocking him from healing from that—with him it is only a matter of allowing himself to properly act on it. carmy also buckles rather quickly and terribly under pressure. no matter how much he ignores it, there is an undercurrent of his Fi working and sort of poking him and prompting him to react on it. it’s usually slightly deprioritized, but never 100% shut out. he will always have a sort of moment of breath where he lets himself acknowledge what he’s feeling, even if only for a second in the form of a deep sigh or a complaint. with his Ne, we get virtually no traces of any strong usage in the show.
