He's egocentric and lacks awareness of others as he constantly pays attention and talks only about his own needs and opinions. He always keeps dozens of mirrors around him that all point at him, leting him fix every mistake he has without having to care about the outside world. It's implied that he uses Claire just to vent and as a mirror herself, constantly comparing himself with her nice traits and comparing her bad traits with how good he is. It's also implied in the mom's flashbacks and shown in a frame of his song (if you pause it at the right moment) that he actually is facially disfigured and he just pretends as if he's not.
