Adachi's mother struggles to connect with her daughter and has a hard time engaging with others on an emotional level in general; she's also rather abrasive and doesn't have much issue spontaneously antagonizing people, even if it's just part of some bewildering joke. This suggests struggles with Fe; she attempts to remedy these struggles by playing along with Shimamura's idea of what a family should be at some point, but it fails, she doesn't know what to do, and it ends up awkward and uncomfortable in the end. Her willingness to give Adachi so much freedom, stay out of her personal life, and ultimately let her leave the house without any fuss and with minimal discussion all communicate a surprisingly uncontrolling personality capable of living with a very important chunk of her life outside of her control.
