Adachi's mother struggles to connect with her daughter and has a hard time engaging with others on an emotional level in general; she's also rather abrasive and doesn't have much issue spontaneously antagonizing people, even if it's just part of some bewildering joke. This suggests struggles with Fe; she attempts to remedy these struggles by playing along with Shimamura's idea of what a family should be at some point, but it fails, she doesn't know what to do, and it ends up awkward and uncomfortable in the end.
