Even though I am not religious, I look up to this man. His many contributions to the field of mathematics came to him from visions of the gods appearing in his prayers or his dreams, as more than just numbers, but as something divine. I wish to see the same beauty of mathematics that he saw, viewing mathematics as more than a law that governs how the world works, but instead as an art, as a creation worthy of admiration. As another mathematician may hear the laws of mathematics a few notes of a violin, Ramanujan would hear it as a grand orchestra performance.
Biografia
Srinivasa Ramanujan ( 22 December 1887 – 26 April 1920) was an Indian mathematician who lived during the British Rule in India. Though he had almost no formal training in pure mathematics, he made substantial contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions, including solutions to mathematical problems considered to be unsolvable. Ramanujan initially developed his own mathematical research in isolation; it was quickly recognized by Indian mathematicians.
