First of all, I think that it's hard to assess a person's cognitive functions when they have experienced excessive trauma and deal with mental illness. That being said, I will attempt to do so after having consumed a ridiculous amount of Beach Boys/Brian Wilson books, documentaries, and interviews. His musical career started off tame and conservative early on, experimental with Pet Sounds, Smile, and a few other songs, then became tame and conservative again. Most of his music seems Si or Se, but I want to examine why. Brian Wilson was beat so bad by his father that he was deaf in one ear. I say that to show that he was very afraid of his father and was brainwashed into needing his approval. He had NO self-confidence of his own, which is why he went along with what his father wanted in the beginning of his career. After some success, he finally had the confidence to make music for himself, and made music that was incredibly revolutionary. The problem was his bandmates, especially Mike Love, had no interest in artistic innovation, and they didn't let him pursue more innovation. I can see why someone would think he's Si-Fe for not taking over and exacting his will or even leaving, but that's not taking into account his mental illness, trauma, and low self esteem. In fact, a common trauma response is wishing for a situation to get better, but not taking any action to get out of the situation (the situation being: being in a band that didn't fit his needs and actively attempted to suppress his artistry). He was so mentally unstable and brainwashed that he was in an abusive conservationship for many years (twice!), where again, he was told to make "safe" music. Now, for a cognitive function breakdown: Ni: I believe that he leads with a perceiving function. He is not one to boss people around, and seems to be in a flow state when he's expressing music that comes to him in his head. I've heard some people see the music that plays in his head as a mental illness, and I've noticed Ni can often be perceived as a mental illness by people who don't understand Ni. The music he made when he was least micromanaged, Pet Sounds, was so innovative, he basically reinvented the wheel for pop music and production. Fe: His extroverted auxiliary is pretty obvious. He wanted to get along with everyone, especially his bandmates and family, even to his own detriment. His agreeability (as well as the negative effects of his trauma and mental illness) led him to be pushed around by bandmates and his conservator, "Dr." Landy. Ti: I can see Ti in the production and arrangement of his music. (I will not lie, I'm not very confident in my understanding of Ti, and I would love to hear more about how you think his Ti might be expressed.) Se: This one is also very obvious, as he was in an intense Se grip for years, resorting to drug use and overindulgence in unhealthy foods when he was being most micromanaged and suppressed. Another way I see this low Se is, he absolutely hated performing music and entertaining others. The bottom line is this man was an innovative and creative genius who was simultaneously very mentally ill and vulnerable and controlled. I'm so thankful for his authentic music, and it makes me sad to think about all the genius he didn't get to share with the world because of people like his father, Dr. Landy, and Mike Love. I do not believe Brian Wilson was an S type, and I don't think that's an iNtuitive bias, as there's nothing wrong with S types. I'm just taking into account what he's shared about his personality and music making process, as well as the context of his life experiences.
