𝐆𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐋𝐄 ✦ (1/2) 𝐑𝐄𝐈𝐍𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐂𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐎𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐑 “ It feels… normal. Like, in a good way! ” I see some people voting her Self-Preservation Four, which… makes no sense. So, I made this small argument that deeply analyzes Fast Food Masquerade and how it showcases Gangle being a Social Four. 𝐈. SHAME AND BEING SEEN AS SOMEONE OF VALUE There is imperfection in Gangle. Feeling as if something is missing within her, she sets out to find a mask that makes her feel ‘normal’ in her eyes. But this mask doesn’t merely reflect her, it also reflects on how she wishes the (social) group to perceive her. In the past, Gangle was always a background character. She never was one who brought a lot of attention towards herself, regularly being mocked by Jax for being so compliant. This quiet nature can fit Social Four, a subtype who refrains being in the spotlight while simultaneously suffering due to the feeling of being non-existent. ➤ “Shame hides the need to be liked by everyone, [...] that is why he presents himself as soft, affectionate, calm, good-natured.” (ENVIDIA) However, Fast Food Masquerade—the episode made to focus on Gangle—reveals what she desires. It’s evident that, similar to the core belief of EVI, Gangle aspires to be loved and recognized by those around her, yet, lacked the courage to put herself out there until given the opportunity by becoming the shift manager. Here, Gangle attempts to present herself in a way that is recognized by her peers—a consistent priority within this subtype. ➤ “The social E4 has a constant need for recognition not only from the group to which it belongs, but also from outsiders[.] …He sees himself and identifies himself based on how the world perceives him.” (ENVIDIA) Throughout the episode, Gangle attempts to present herself in a way that will grant her social approval. However, when told how her happy mask is annoying/she’s better when she’s sad, she feels downcasted. The glass shatter represents her perception towards external reproach—dejected in knowing that the others are perceiving her in a negative light. At the end of the episode, Gangle’s response to the group’s rejection can fit E4’s ego-reaction of discouragement. She retreats and hides away, all while devaluing herself by emphasizing on what she lacked. → Gangle: “I messed everything up. The mask didn’t work. And now, I don’t think anyone wants to talk to me anymore.” Although she never outright says it, Gangle directs a lot of her attention towards her placement in the group. She wants to be ‘normal’, something everyone else is in her eyes. She compares herself to those around her—something prominent for this subtype.
