Albeit SX5 isn't, imo, a bad read on the character at all considering his romantic nature; being romantic is just a "SX" variant thing. I'm way more convinced Nygma was actually a Sexual 6. Not even w5 either, but w7. I'll try and explain. First, let's start with the Defense mechanism. Sixes project and tend to see threats in others, Fives isolate themselves in their minds to avoid exhausting their energy with others - or even their very own emotions. Nygma, however, wasn't one to isolate himself. He was very personable, often used jokes to cope, approached others and tried to make them smile and laugh. Very little - if any - 5 traits on him except for the fact that he was smart and knowledgeable. ... But he did Project. And he projected *a lot.* Let's not even touch so much on the "Lee Thompkins" situations; doubting her from the start, denying his vulnerable feelings, expecting the worst out of her (and everyone, really) due to his chronic trust issues, etc. Let's not. The most glaring example is when he thought Jim Gordon knew that he had killed Mrs. Kringle. Every word from Jim, every look, was reason enough for him to be *so sure* that James was out to get him; so much that he decided to eliminate him before - in his mind - he made his move on him. Projection, projection. ❝𝐈𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨.❝ Why specifically Sexual 6, however? Imo, it's the only subtype he'd fit perfectly. He was a romantic at heart - the SX IV blueprint. He made very little efforts to fit in society - SO blindness. Yet, he often embraced Ingratiating Friendliness (the need to present a warm persona) quite often behind his arrogant front - befriending Grundy and Penguin for his own benefit. Now that I mentioned Penguin; that's actually very important for his development. The first thing that happened when he got rid of Oswald was... severe identity issues. He couldn't find himself, couldn't guide himself. He said so, in his own words: "I need a guide". If that isn't an E6 line, I don't know what is - but that is the sad truth of Nygma. Despite him actually putting on a strong, intimidating and elusive front; he was rather vulnerable. He dreamt and idealized the thought of a non-threatening relationship. Or, who he thought had wronged him. He had a need for strength and for defending himself. I interpret his dissociation - and thus the creation of his Riddler alias - to be both a SX6's need to Project a "strong" persona to protect the self + a 6 to 3 disintegration. Riddler was the embodiment of a narcissistic E3; but that wasn't the average Edward Nygma's self.
