After thinking about it I'm actually leaning towards him being an 8 rather than a 7. Both 7 and 8 are rebellious and hedonistic types in their own ways, but they can be distinguished by how 7's gluttony-driven hedonism is excessively positive - that is, they flee from anything that isn't a positive, happy experience in the most basic sense of the term, wanting to avoid difficulty, strife, and the possibility of loss. 8's lust-driven hedonism, in contrast, is fulfilled by a wider range of experiences, and 8s are driven to throw themselves into intense situations to seek out their intensity, even if the nature of these situations involves a risk of pain. The lust seeks out both directly hedonistic thrills and the thrill of challenges, and the losing and pain fulfill the lust just as triumph and power do. Let's compare this to Setzer. He makes a life out of gambling not because he thinks he will always be able to win via cleverness and planning and is driven deep down by a fear of losing and not being able to escape, but because he DOESN'T CARE if he wins or loses - both are fulfilling of his lust for thrill and intensity. When he joins the party, he doesn't have some grand plan for how they will win which he optimistically believes will come to pass, but admits he is driven by the thrill of the idea of risking his life. The appeal is in the intensity, the gamble and the possibility of losing. Of course, this carelessness is masking a fundamental lack of care for whether he lives or dies, which gets into the deeper psychology behind 8s - as Naranjo describes, they exert an exaggerated aliveness to hide an internal calloused deadness. Setzer feels dead and empty, so he compensates with lust, living a life of constant freedom, challenge, and intensity. His bond with Daryl/Darrill also is very dependent on this lust, as they are rivals as often as friends and always competing and racing with each other in the air. Whenever we see him attempt to bond with others it is always through some filter of lust rather than just being open in friendship, suggesting 8's difficulty with normal "softer" emotions and vulnerability. He hides his worry for Darrill behind acting as if he just wants to compete with her, and of course his first scene is outright trying to kidnap someone and make her marry him, showing 8's preference of conquest over compassion. And he both joins and rejoins the party, as I mentioned, because they can provide him some sort of intense challenge to envelop himself in. In addition, he shows none of the clever guardedness in rebellion that 7s tend to show, where they prefer to rebel through finding loopholes and using their charisma over being blatant about it. He is introduced as someone who blatantly, without apologizing, lives a life outside of the normal moral constraints of society, and wants to make a showy entrance to show he is "proud of being bad", an attitude typical of 8s.
Biografia
A gambler and owner of the Blackjack, a flying casino airship. Setzer lives for the thrill of gambling and commits himself to the Returners' cause for no more reason than he was tricked with a two-headed coin by Celes. When the Blackjack is destroyed in the world's destruction, Setzer becomes a demoralized drunk bemoaning the loss of his wings. Celes snaps him out of it and Setzer rejoins the crew and raises the Falcon, another airship owned by his late friend Darill.
