Cao Yu, widely regarded as the most accomplished playwright in the history of Chinese modern drama and an outstanding drama educator, is celebrated for masterpieces such as Thunderstorm, Sunrise, The Wilderness, and Peking Man. Born on September 24, 1910, he developed a passion for theater in his childhood while accompanying his stepmother to traditional Chinese opera performances. During his secondary school years, he joined the Nankai New Drama Troupe, frequently performing female leads and engaging in script translation and adaptation—experiences that set him on his pioneering path in modern drama creation. After five years of meticulous planning and writing during his university studies, Cao Yu's debut play Thunderstorm premiered in 1934. Endorsed by renowned writer Ba Jin, its publication and subsequent staging caused an immediate sensation. This groundbreaking work holds profound significance in Chinese theater history and is universally acknowledged as the defining milestone marking the maturity of modern Chinese drama. Though Cao Yu produced his greatest works before turning thirty, he struggled for decades afterward to surpass his earlier achievements, gradually losing his creative momentum. He passed away on December 13, 1996, leaving behind a legacy tinged with artistic unfulfillment.
