背景
Cao Yu(曹禺), regarded as one of the most accomplished playwright of Chinese modern drama, is celebrated for scripts such as Thunderstorm, Sunrise, The Wilderness, and Peking Man. Born on September 24, 1910, he developed a passion for theater in childhood while accompanying his stepmother to traditional Chinese opera performances. During his secondary school years, he joined the Nankai New Drama Troupe, frequently performing female leads and engaging in script translation and adaptation. After five years of planning and writing in university, Cao Yu's debut play Thunderstorm premiered in 1934. Endorsed by renowned writer Ba Jin, its publication and subsequent staging caused an immediate sensation. Though Cao Yu produced most of his great works before turning forty, he struggled for decades afterward to recreate earlier achievements, while constrained by the times and personality. He passed away on December 13, 1996, leaving behind a legacy tinged with artistic unfulfillment.
