Why Hopper Is NOT a Counterphobic 6 (My Opinion): While I do agree 6s can be domineering or tyrannical, Hopper’s motivation seems to be domination-driven rather than fear-driven. “You let one ant stand up to us, then they all might stand up. Those puny little ants outnumber us a hundred to one. And if they ever figure that out, there goes our way of life! It's not about food; it's about keeping those ants in line." 1. Obedience vs. Respect This is one of the main things that separates 8s from counterphobic 6s. 6's crave loyalty and assurance and may use domination as a tool for survival, but rarely crave submission for its own sake. 8's view other's obedience as proof of their own strength and authority. When Hopper is presented with an opportunity that promises better security/stability for him and his gang he rejects it because it would mean giving up control over the ants. 2. Us vs. Them Hopper refers to the ants disdainfully throughout the movie, and he has no problem eliminating them if it means keeping his place on top. He clearly sees them as inferior and holds a very dominant worldview: those who are strong vs. those who aren’t, those who subjugate vs. those who submit. Hopper doesn’t merely defend against the ants like a 6 likely would— he exploits them simply because he CAN. Survival is how he rationalizes his actions. 3. Rejects Alternatives in Favour of Maintaining Control In my opinion, this is the most telling point. Hopper is literally presented with an opportunity to remain in a more stable, secure environment with abundant resources and bugs who cater to him and his gang. This would be a dream scenario for a 6 — even a counterphobic one — since they ultimately strive toward the same goal: stability and security. What does Hopper do? He insists on going back to the island, because his goal is no longer stability — it’s dominance. He doesn’t use dominance to ensure survival; he uses survival to rationalize and justify domination. 4. Threat Perception A 6 would likely see punishing in-group dissent (which Hopper does to his own followers in the bar scene) as an action that reduces security and could potentially lead to betrayal. A 6 would be more inclined to respond to questioning by reassessing strategy, pivoting tactically, or seeking reassurance. What does Hopper do? He doubles down. 6's experience fear and anxiety when they are questioned; 8's weaponize it. Hopper doesn’t debate or reassess when faced with dissent — he immediately punishes it. When Hopper explains his reasoning for returning to Ant Island, it becomes clear that he isn’t protecting the gang’s security; he’s protecting his own authority, favoring power preservation over survival optimization. 5. Competence vs. Loyalty I think Hopper’s relationship with Molt would be quite different if Hopper were a counterphobic 6. Molt is unserious and weak, but he’s deeply loyal to Hopper on a personal level because they’re brothers. A 6 would likely value loyalty over strength and someone like Molt, who follows blindly and loyally, seems like the kind of follower a 6 would keep around or at least tolerate since 6’s would see Molt as reliable. Hopper doesn’t feel or express any of that; he literally states that the only reason why he keeps Molt around is because of the promise he made to their late mother. Most of the time he can’t tolerate Molt because he thinks Molt’s incompetence reflects badly on him and makes him look weak, something that is unacceptable to an 8 due to their core fear of powerlessness. Molt’s loyalty is not enough to make up for his incompetence in Hopper’s mind. Hopper doesn’t see Molt as an asset, he sees him as a liability since as an unhealthy 8, he has very low tolerance for weakness and prioritizes strength over reliability.
