Through the entire epic, most of Odysseus decisions have been most influenced by his own self-preservation. He is fear-based, and his go-to strategy is to avoid things that will go wrong, even at the cost of others. Examples: killing the infant to protect his own happy future, sacrificing the men to scylla, killing the sirens. This is the e7 pattern of avoiding painful experiences. 7 move towards 1 in stress. Odysseus when he’s in a more healthy state of mind, is clever, devious and willing to bend the rules. He only shows self-righteous anger as a response to his friend dying and the painful consequences of his actions. Notice that he didn’t really care about the “fairness” of tricking the cyclops until his friends were killed, and then he’s like, “you need to be taught a lesson”. He insists on saving the men from Circe out of this place of guilt as well. Odysseus as head type makes more sense for his character, you remember him first for being a scheming, witty, and charismatic. Yes, he grapples with moral quandaries, but being a naturally moral/principled person is just not his personality.
