Who is “that strange otherworldly girl who so easily accepted the presence of the dead among the living”? This are words by which Ruth is described in the movie. She is a quiet, mysterious girl and a loner, rarely making contact with others. Still she contains deep wisdom and has a strong intuitive awareness of what is going on beneath the surface of things. She has a deep emotional bond with Susie and can sense her present, even when others struggle with this. Furthermore she is highly attuned to the symbolical and the metaphorical and writes poems exploring different themes and motives of her life. Later on she experiences a vision of Susies death and suddenly understands her death putting the pieces unconsciously together to see the bigger picture. (Ni) Ruth is also quite rebellious being a feminist and interested in helping murdered girls like Susie seeing it, as her purpose.
